Russia acknowledges its ground troops are fighting in Idlib

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has acknowledged for the first time the presence of Russian military fighting alongside Syrian regime forces in the Idlib assault, confirming numerous earlier reports.

During a press conference he held following a meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchway yesterday, Lavrov confirmed that “There are Russian soldiers on the ground in the Syrian province of Idlib,” stating that Russia would respond to any attack on its soldiers in Syria.

Russian Su-35s Intercept Turkish F-16s Over Syria’s Idlib - Reports

Two Russian Air Force Su-35 heavyweight air superiority fighters have reportedly intercepted Turkish F-16 Fighting Falcons over the southern countryside of Syria’s Idlib Governorate. Russia has deployed Su-35 fighters to Khmeimi Airbase in Syria’s Latakia province since January 2016, following the Turkish downing of a Russian Su-24 strike fighter near the Syrian-Turkish border the previous year. While the Su-24 lacked an air to air capability, and jets previously deployed such as the Su-25 and Su-34 were designed primarily for an air to ground role and deployed for airstrikes against Islamist militants, the Su-35 has been equipped from the outset with air to air missiles and is intended to defend Russian and to a lesser extent allied forces in the theatre.

Syria - Frontline Breach Opens Door To A Deep Battle For Idlib

During the last months the Syrian government made some progress in the norther part of Hama governorate on the border to the jihadi held Idlib governorate. The breach of the jihadi defense lines must now be used to develop a larger campaign.

The maps show the progress between May 15 2019 and today (Red - government control; Green - jihadi control).

The current operation is a pincer movement on the western and eastern side of Khan Shaykhun. It is designed to envelope the jihadi held towns Al Lataminah, Kafr Zayta, Khan Shaykhun and Morek.

The encirclement north of Khan Shaykhun will close within the next several days. The jihadis who stay within the cauldron will have little chance to survive.

RUSSIA ACKNOWLEDGES ITS GROUND TROOPS ARE FIGHTING IN IDLIB

SOURCE: MIDDLE EAST MONITOR

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has acknowledged for the first time the presence of Russian military fighting alongside Syrian regime forces in the Idlib assault, confirming numerous earlier reports.

During a press conference he held following a meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchway yesterday, Lavrov confirmed that “There are Russian soldiers on the ground in the Syrian province of Idlib,” stating that Russia would respond to any attack on its soldiers in Syria.

The acknowledgment by Russia of its direct military presence on the ground in the province is the first which has been made following months of speculation and reports of the troops’ presence over the past month, particularly after Syrian opposition forces sighted the deployment of Russian troops in July.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One cannot really blame Russia for this decision at this point in Syria's war against US trained/armed/funded jihadis.

An all-out decisive battle, with Syria and Russia winning, would most likely cut the heart out of any further support for future destabilization of Syria by the West, with two, local Middle East exceptions; and those would be Turkey, and Israel.
The following incident just happened a couple of days ago:

Turkey complains that one of its convoys got hit by a Syrian missile Strike

And Turkish President Erdogan, a word, please; if you invade a sovereign neighbor, against whom you have not declared war, nor has it declared war on you, I think you, and Turkey's military got off rather lightly, considering the circumstances. Additionally, it appears that the US government absolutely impotent to stop these incursions.

Additionally, Israel believes that it is justified in shelling Syria at any time they please, as indicated by this article, dated July 2019:

Israelis attack in Southern Syria

What really concerns me, is the very real eventuality of a US/Israeli dual pronged approach to preventing Syria's getting it country back, resulting in a potential decap strike on Damascus, which Russia, coordinating with the Syrian military, would have to happen at that point.

War with Russia... over Syria?!?

Folks, this is a lose/lose scenario for both the US, and Israel.

Turkey-Syria War On The Horizon: Airstrikes Target Invading Turkish Army Convoy

Turkey and Syria could be headed for war as their armies increasingly clash on front lines in southern Idlib, also amid a heavy aerial bombardment by Syrian and Russian jets of al-Qaeda held Khan Sheikhoun.

On Monday a Turkish convoy came under attack by Syrian airstrikes while traversing a highway headed toward Khan Sheikhoun. Damascus has accused Turkey of seeking to aid terrorists in the besieged town, which had been site of prior chemical attack claims issued by anti-Assad fighters, and fired "warning shots" on the approaching armored convoy, killing and injuring some among the pro-Turkish force.

The sources, meantime, pointed to a complete disconnection of the International Aleppo-Damascus Highway under Russian and Syrian airstrikes, and said that three Faylaq al-Sham terrorists, backed by the Turkish Army, who were moving through this route were killed.

The Turkish military convoy comprised 28 military vehicles, tanks and trucks carrying different types of weapons, missiles and military equipment as well as several armored personnel carriers.

Military Source Confirms Terrorists Down Syrian Air Force Jet in Idlib

Syrian government forces said earlier this month that they were resuming military operations in the provinces of Idlib and Hama, citing the militants' refusal to observe a ceasefire deal, which had gone into effect on 1 August, by launching several attacks on civilians in nearby areas.

Syria's state television reported Wednesday, citing a military source, that militants operating in the province of Idlib shot down a Syrian air force plane and the fate of the pilot reportedly remains unknown.

"One of our military aircraft, whose task was to destroy headquarters of the Nusra Front terrorist group in the al-Tamania area, was shot down on 14 August by a missile launched by terrorists from armed groups operating in the region", the source said, cited by Syria TV television.

Syria Warns US-Turkey “Safe Zone” Deal Is a Plot for “Expansionist Ambitions”

After three days of intense negotiations in Ankara, US and Turkish officials reached an agreement on Wednesday to create a joint operations center and set up a safe zone east of the Euphrates in north eastern Syria. Deal details have not yet been disclosed.

This last minute deal between Washington and Ankara is in response to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s announcement on Sunday that Turkey was prepared to carry out a unilateral cross-border operation to push back Kurdish militias on the Syrian Turkish border east of the Euphrates river, if the Washington didn’t cut ties with the Kurdish militias and create a safe zone in northern Syria.

Pentagon Uses Report to Lobby Against Bogus Syria Pullout

The Pentagon was very public about how much they opposed President Trump’s plan to withdraw from Syria last year. They’re still very opposed to it, and are trying to spin it as a mark of failure in Syria.

There are big problems with this argument, the biggest of which is that the US never actually withdrew from Syria in the first place, so any report that suggests this mythical pullout caused other things to happen was necessarily flawed.

Still, that didn’t stop the Pentagon from issuing a report that claimed that ISIS is making a comeback in Syria because of Trump’s withdrawal, which never actually happened. This is a fairly cynical attempt to further pollute the idea of the pullout, and ensure a permanent US presence.

The Citadels Of America's Elites: Fractured And At Odds With Each Other

A significant shift is underway in US policy circles, it seems. Luce’s final ‘take’ is that “it is very hard to see what, or who, is going to prevent this great power rivalry from dominating the 21st century”. It is clear that there is indeed now a clear bi-partisan consensus in the US on China. Luce is surely right. But that is far from being the end of it. A collective psychology of belligerence seems to be taking shape, and, as one commentator noted, it has become not just a great-power rivalry, but a rivalry amongst ‘Beltway’ policy wonks to show “who has the bigger dick”.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – AUGUST 9, 2019: MILITANTS ON RETREAT IN NORTHWESTERN HAMA

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other militant groups in northern Hama are losing ground under pressure from government forces.

On August 8, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies liberated the village of Sakhar and the nearby hilltop. Pro-government activists said that SAA special forces overrun militants’ defense in Sakhar in the early hours of the morning, forcing them to withdraw from the village and its surroundings. At least 10 militants and 4 pieces of military equipment, including a battle tank, were eliminated in the recent offensive operation by the SAA.

The course of the ongoing offensive demonstrates that the SAA is likely seeking to outflank the militant-held town of Kafr Zayta from the northern direction before government troops will start the storm of this strong point. In this case, government forces will need to secure their flank by liberating the settlements of al-Habit and Kafr Ayn.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – AUGUST 8, 2019: ARMY MAKES FRESH GAINS IN BATTLE FOR NORTHERN HAMA

On the morning of August 7, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Tiger Forces advanced on positions of radical militants in northwestern Hama. During the day, units of the SAA and the Tiger Forces liberated the villages of Arbeen and al-Zakah.

Government troops also cut off the supply line between the militant-held towns of Kafr Zita and al-Lataminah and increased artillery and air strikes on positions in this area.

Kafr Zita and al-Lataminah are the key strong points of Jaysh al-Izza and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) in this part of the so-called Idlib de-escalation zone.

On August 5, the Syrian Armed Forces released a warning to militants that, if they continue to violate the ceasefire regime, the SAA would have to resume military operations. On August 6, violations continued. So, since August 7, the SAA has been conducting active actions to push radical militants out of the supposed demilitarized zone around Idlib.

PENTAGON WARNS IT WILL PREVENT "UNACCEPTABLE" TURKISH INVASION OF NORTHERN SYRIA

Turkey has for days been poised to unilaterally invade northern Syria over US objections, which Ankara officials say is to establish a 32 kilometer (20 mile) inside the war torn country, giving Turkey complete control of a region where the Syrian Kurdish YPG operates (People's Protection Units). Turkey has long considered the US-backed group, which forms the core of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), to be a terrorist extension of the outlawed PKK.

The Pentagon has condemned the impending Turkish unilateral move, with US Defense Secretary Mark Esper telling reporters early Tuesday that it would be unacceptable and thwarted by Washington, though it's unclear how far the Pentagon would be willing to go. "What we're going to do is prevent unilateral incursions that would upset, again, these mutual interests that the United States, Turkey and the SDF share with regard to northern Syria," Esper said.

Raytheon published a company press release last week that detailed how it "will deploy two prototype high energy laser weapon systems" to the Air Force for a 12-month in-field operation against enemy drones.

The $23 million contract for two of Raytheon’s High Energy Laser Weapons Systems (HELWS) will be used by the Air Force in an unknown warzone overseas, most likely Syria for about one year.

"What we really want to do is figure out how we can deploy these systems in an environment where our warfighters work and train every day," said Evan Hunt, director of high energy laser and counter-UAS at Raytheon.

Video: Collapse of Ceasefire, Syrian Military Vows to Resume Operations Against Al Qaeda Militants

The new ceasefire agreement designed to cease hostilities in northwestern Hama and southern Idlib has just collapsed.

On August 3, the leader of Hay’at Tahir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra), Abu Mohammad al-Julani, announced that his group would not withdraw “a single fighter or a weapon” from the demilitarized zone and vowed to recapture the areas, which had been liberated by the Syrian Army. The withdrawal of radicals from this demilitarized zone had been the key demand behind the establishment of the ceasefire.

On the same day, Abu al-Walid al-Tunisi, a senior commander of al-Qaeda-affiliated Horas al-Din, was killed in an improvised-explosive device (IED) explosion in Taftanaz in eastern Idlib. Some pro-militant sources immediately blamed Damascus.

PENTAGON WARNS IT WILL PREVENT "UNACCEPTABLE" TURKISH INVASION OF NORTHERN SYRIA

Webmaster's Commentary:

Let's see here; Turkey is a NATO ally, with one of the largest standing armies within the NATO band of brother/sister countries; Turkey has just spurned the US's F-35 in favor of Russia's S-400 defense systems; what could possibly go wrong here, other than the deaths of US service members, pledged to support the Kurdish military in Syria?!?

Everything, including an expulsion of Turkey from NATO, if they go ahead with this invasion; and Russia... has been "grooming" Turkey with an eye toward turning this country into a Russian asset, for quite some time now, and through several US administrations.

One of the most alarming aspects to this story, is that no one in DC appears to have seen this situation coming.

One of the most vile, and ill-kept secrets in DC is that those in the Bowels of Power, and their operatives, remain pathologically incapable of thinking a scenario through to its logical conclusion.; this is why we have Turkey breaking away from NATO in spirit, and perhaps, soon, in fact.

And Russia's President Putin is laughing himself to sleep over this potential Turkish invasion of Syria, potentially creating a really embarrassing situation for the the US and for NATO.

Erdogan announces military operation east of Euphrates river to push back Kurds, US urges him to reconsider

In what would be Turkey’s third cross-border military operation in Syria since the war began, in as many years, Erdogan announced on Sunday that he would be launching a military operation east of the Euphrates river, to push back Kurdish militias on Turkey’s southern border.

Although Erdogan did not set a timeframe, preparations have been underway for well over a month. Increased deployment of Turkish military forces along with weaponry, and tanks, etc. have been reported by various sources, on the Turkish side of the southern border with Syria.

Preparations are also underway by Kurdish militias, to counter any possible Turkish aggression. Both sides have said that if the other attacks they will be ready to respond.

Any Turkish incursion into Syria ‘unacceptable,’ Pentagon chief warns

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Tuesday any Turkish operation into northern Syria would be “unacceptable” and Washington would prevent unilateral incursions, Reuters reports.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey, which already has a foothold in northwest Syria, will carry out a military operation in a Kurdish-controlled area east of the Euphrates in northern Syria.

“Clearly we believe any unilateral action by [Turkey] would be unacceptable,” Esper told reporters in Tokyo. “What we’re going to do is prevent unilateral incursions that would upset, again, these mutual interests… the US, Turkey and [the Syrian Democratic Forces] share with regard to northern Syria,” Esper said.

Another Failed Ceasefire in Syria

This time is following the earlier pattern. Once again, jihadists violated the agreement, surprising no one knowing how they operate.

Controlled by the US and its imperial partners, they salute and obey orders to prevent conflict resolution.

Achieving it would defeat Washington’s aim to transform Syria into a US client state, eliminate an Israeli rival, and isolate Iran — the scheme supported by both right wings of the imperial state’s war party, the human toll of no consequence.

On Friday, AMN News reported that al-Nusra jihadists in Idlib province attacked eastern Latakia city, breaching the fantasy ceasefire straightaway, citing a Syrian military source.

ERDOGAN PUBLICLY ANNOUNCES TURKEY INVASION EAST OF THE EUPHRATES

SOURCE: MIDDLE EAST MONITOR
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has publicly announced the decision to launch a long-awaited military operation in Syria, east of the Euphrates River, and said that the United States (US) and Russia have been warned and provided with the information necessary.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony in the north-western city of Bursa yesterday, Erdogan stated that “We entered Afrin, Jarabulus, and Al-Bab, and now we’re going to enter east of the Euphrates,” adding that “We shared this with the US and Russia.”

The military operation has been highly speculated on in recent weeks following talks between Turkish military figures such as Minister of Defence Hulusi Akar and US Envoy to Syria James Jeffreys regarding a proposed safe zone in northern Syria. At the start of the talks in July, Turkey warned that it would conduct the operation if an agreement was not reached for the establishment of the zone.

Webmaster's Commentary:

My big question here is, what will Russia do, if this incursion goes ahead, as planned?!?

There had to be some kind of quid pro quo, at least with Russia, for them to allow this Turkish military operation to move forward; I am having a hard time believing that Russia would go along with this, without getting something back for Al Assad, but only time will reveal what that was.

Bellingcat unloads 4,000-word piece on Tulsi Gabbard over her questioning Syria chemical attacks

In case you’ve missed it all, Gabbard has been branded a ‘Russian’ spoiler for whichever candidate is eventually picked, and, once again, an apologist for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Joining the chorus of bashers on Sunday was Elliot Higgins, the founder of the UK-based ‘citizen investigation’ outlet Bellingcat, who wrote a whopping 4,000-word piece attacking Gabbard’s negative attitude toward regime change wars. In particular, Higgins didn’t like her skepticism over chemical weapons attacks in Syria reflected on her campaign website. The attacks were used by Washington to justify missile attacks against the country’s government – and by extension continued illegal US military presence in the country.

The mammoth piece starts with screenshots featuring logos of RT and InfoWars (Russian propaganda, dear readers, conspiracy theories!) and goes on to criticize anyone doubting the US-favored narrative about what happened in Syria.

The three guarantor states in the Syrian peace process have reiterated their commitment to preserving Syria’s sovereignty, at the end of the 13th round of talks for peace in the Arab country in Kazakhstan’s capital, Nur-Sultan.

In the final communiqué of the two-day talks issued on Friday, the guarantor states, namely Iran, Russia, and Turkey, reaffirmed their adherence to the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria.

They also stressed their determination to continue their cooperation until the complete elimination of all terrorist groups in the country.

The three countries also rejected the occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights by the Israeli regime.

They also expressed deep concern over the spread of activities by the so-called Jabhat Fateh al-Sham terrorist group, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, across the northwestern province of Idlib.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – AUGUST 2, 2019: IDLIB MILITANTS RESCUED BY ANOTHER CEASEFIRE

On August 1, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies continued their advance on militants’ positions in northern Hama liberated the villages of Mushairifah, Aziziah, Abu Raeida Gharbi and Abu Raeida.

According to local sources, SAA units also pushed towards al-Zaka and al-Arbaeen, but were not able to capture these strongpoints of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda and its allies, especially Jaysh al-Izza, have reportedly suffered from heavy losses as a result of the recent clashes and intensified bombing campaign.

At least eleven militants of the Turkish-backed Suqour al-Sham Brigades were killed on August 1 when pro-government fighters raided their position near Ejaz in southeastern Idlib. The attackers reportedly used silenced weapons to kill everyone that was inside the position before withdrawing to the SAA positions near Abu Duhur airbase.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – JULY 13-17, 2019: WAITING FOR NEW IDLIB OFFENSIVE

The situation in northwestern Hama and along the entire contact line around the Idlib de-escalation zone has remained stable but tense during the past week. The Syrian Arab Army, the Tiger Forces and their allies have repeatedly engaged in local clashes with Hayat Tahir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) and other radical groups. However, no side has undertaken any notable offensive operations.

Fresh satellite images of the Russian Hmeimim airbase showed the deployment of seven Su-24, four Su-25, seven Su-34 and four Su-35 warplanes as well as an A-50 airborne early warning and control, an IL-20 electronic intelligence plane, two IL-76 and an An-30 cargo planes.

The warplanes were all deployed on the airbase’s ramp. This indicates that the hardened aircraft shelters are still under construction. New revetments are being built in the northeastern section of the airbase. These measures are needed to prevent any damage that may be caused by repeated armed drone attacks by militants.

Israel businessman working with army has his eye on Syria oil

An American-Israeli businessman has been granted permission to export oil extracted from Kurdish areas under the control of Syria’s pro-Washington Democratic Forces. Arab news sources have cited Moti Kahana as the person charged with facilitating the sale of crude oil produced in oil fields controlled by the Kurds in eastern Syria to Israel.

Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which published the story said its claim was based on leaked documents. Kahana however has swiftly came out to reject the story but admitted to Israel Hayom that he has in fact tried to end Syrian oil sales to Iran. On his Facebook page, Kahana wrote that he opposes the Iranian presence in Syria, which he says belongs to the Syrian people.

TURKEY WILL GET A CHUNK OF SYRIA, AN ADVANTAGE OF BEING IN NATO

ERIC ZUESSE, ORIGINALLY POSTED AT THE SAKER
The success of Turkey’s takeover of Syria’s most pro-jihadist province, Idlib, is making less and less likely that Syria will be able to continue maintaining Idlib as being a part of Syria. (This is something I had predicted, back on 14 September 2018, to be possible or even likely, and now it is actually happening.) On July 10th, Reuters headlined “Assad hits a wall in Syrian war as front lines harden”, and reported that, “More than two months of Russian-backed operations in and around Idlib province have yielded little or nothing for Assad’s side. It marks a rare case of a military campaign that has not gone his way since Russia intervened in 2015. While resisting government attacks, the insurgents have managed to carve out small advances of their own, drawing on ample stocks of guided anti-tank missiles that opposition and diplomatic sources say have been supplied by Turkey.” It continues:

HOW ISRAELI-DESIGNED DRONES BECAME RUSSIA’S EYES IN THE SKY FOR DEFENDING BASHAR AL-ASSAD

How Israeli-designed drones ended up supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a case study in the complicated relationship between Israel and Russia. Though Russia has been instrumental in protecting the Assad government, which appeared to be on the brink of collapse four years ago, it has also carefully cultivated a military relationship with Israel over the past decade.

After more than seven years of war, the skies over Syria are saturated with aircraft from multiple militaries and armed groups, each pursuing their own goals, including using the country as a weapons-testing ground. American airpower and Kurdish ground forces helped grind the Islamic State’s caliphate down to a tiny pocket before it dramatically collapsed this past spring. Meanwhile, Turkish occupation forces and their proxies are conducting a brutal campaign of repression in the Syrian-Kurdish canton of Afrin.

Video: Syrian Army Repelled Large Attack in Northern Hama. UK Claims Iran Attempted to Capture Its Tanker

On July 10, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and its allies launched a surprise attack on positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama and captured the town of al-Hamameyat and the nearby hill.

According to the group’s news agency, Iba’a, militants destroyed a battle tank and a Shilka self-propelled gun belonging to the SAA. The loss of al-Hamameyat became the first serious SAA setback since April, when pro-government forces launched a limited operation in the area.

On July 11, the SAA and the National Defense Forces, backed up by Russian and Syrian warplanes, launched an attack to take back the town. According to pro-government sources, SAA and NDF units successfully broke the militants’ defense and recaptured al-Hamameyat.

Iran To UK: We'll Continue Oil Exports "Under Any Conditions" As Detained Tanker Crew Released

As the "tanker wars" continue Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned his British counterpart Jeremy Hunt in a telephone call on Saturday that Iran plans to continue its oil exports "under any conditions".

Zarif also repeated Iranian demands for the UK to release the Grace 1 oil tanker, seized over a week ago after it was boarded by Royal Marines off Gibraltar. It had been carrying 2 million barrels of Iranian oil and was alleged to have been bound for Syria, in violation of EU sanctions; however, Tehran has accused the UK of fundamentally doing the United States' bidding.

In a public statement posted to Twitter, Hunt informed Zarif that the UK would release the tanker if it received guarantees it would not go to Syria.

Russia calls for withdrawal of foreign troops from Syria

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko yesterday stressed that any prospective political reconciliation in Syria should include the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

In a press release, Grushko said that the Russian military is the only foreign force based in Syria by invitation, which is in keeping with international law, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported yesterday citing Russia Today (RT).

This came after US news reports that France and Britain have agreed to send troops to replace US troops, which plan to leave Syria after US President Donald Trump in December announced he would withdraw his forces from the country.

UK & France Accept Trump's Call For More Troops In Syria As Germany Rebuffs

Amid an awkward diplomatic row between the UK and US following leaked cables sent from Britain's ambassador to the United States back to London which described President Trump as "inept," "insecure" and "incompetent," the United Kingdom joined France Tuesday in being among the only US allies to heed the administration's call to bolster forces in Syria.

Notably Germany has rebuffed the US request to deploy additional troops as part of the "anti-ISIS coalition" primarily in Syria's north and east after US special envoy James Jeffrey told Die Welt’s Sunday edition that,"We want ground forces from Germany to partially replace our soldiers." This as the Pentagon plans a draw down in line with Trump's longtime promise to the American public of a "full" and "complete" withdrawal which has been long delayed since last year over concerns that either pro-Assad and Iranian forces or Turkey could fill the vacuum.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive me, but I do not see any drawdown in Syria, until the required "regime change" comes about in Damascus; and that is going to take a great deal of time, well beyond a year, if the US can actually pull it off.

Germany says no to US request for ground troops in Syria

Berlin said on Monday it had no plans to send ground troops to Syria, refusing a US request for Germany to ramp up its military involvement in the fight against Islamic State (IS).

US special representative on Syria James Jeffrey had told German media, including the Die Welt newspaper, on Sunday that Washington wanted Berlin to put boots on the ground in northern Syria.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said: "When I say that the government intends to continue with its ongoing measures in the framework of the anti-IS coalition, then that means no ground troops."

Germany rebuffs US call to send ground troops to Syria

Germany has turned down a request from Washington to deploy ground forces in Syria as the US military looks to scale back its presence in the region, describing the proposal as inconsistent with Berlin’s “well known” policy.

US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey confirmed on Sunday that he had asked the German government to provide troops to replace a portion of US forces currently stationed in Syria. He said the request was part of Washington’s preparations for an eventual US military withdrawal in the country.

Berlin didn’t wait long before issuing a curt “nein” to its transatlantic ally.

Gibraltar court extends detention of Iranian tanker for 14 days: Attorney general

A top court in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar has ruled that an Iranian supertanker illegally seized in the Strait of Gibraltar can be detained for up to 14 more days.

“The Supreme Court has issued today’s order on the basis that there are reasonable grounds to consider that the detention of the Grace 1 is required for the purposes of compliance with the European Union (EU) Regulation 36/2012 on sanctions on Syria,” Gibraltar’s government said in a statement on Friday.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said on Thursday that the territory’s police and customs agencies, aided by a detachment of British Royal Marines, had seized the Iranian “Grace 1” vessel on suspicion of carrying crude oil to Syria, which has been under EU sanctions since 2011.

US call for Syria troops divides German coalition

Discord broke out in German Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition Sunday, after the United States urged the country to send ground troops to Syria as Washington looks to withdraw from the region.

Jeffrey, who was visiting Berlin for Syria talks, added that he expects an answer this month.

The Only Strategic Rationale For America's Involvement In Syria Finally Revealed

Authored by Elias Samo via The Strategic Culture Foundation,

“Washington lacks a clear strategy in Syria “; those were the recent words of Robert Ford, the last American ambassador to Syria who served prior to and during the first few years of the Syrian uprising from 2010 to 2014. A man of Ford’s intricate knowledge of the Syrian/American political dynamic is surly knowledgeable enough to assess America’s policy towards Syria. He goes on to say, “It is hard to explain the fundamental American mission in Syria… Is it to fight Daesh? Or is it to help promote a Kurdish autonomous district in Northeastern Syria… Or is it to resist Iranian encouragement?” It is partially all three; however, oddly enough, Mr. Ford avoids the obvious top priority and strategic rationale for America’s involvement in Syria: The Protection of Israel.

Syria will support Iran against all threats, acts of aggression: President Assad

President Bashar al-Assad says Syria fully supports the Iranian nation and the Islamic establishment against all threats and acts, which contravene international law and regulations.

Speaking during a meeting with Ali Asghar Khaji, a senior assistant on special political affairs to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in Damascus on Tuesday, Assad underscored his country’s backing for Iran and its leadership, stating that Syria defends Iranians’ strive for their rights and stands by them against all threats and acts that violate the basis of the international law.

Assad was then briefed on the developments concerning the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), following the US departure from the 2015 agreement, and Washington’s latest escalatory moves in the Middle East region.

Mysterious blasts off Syria's coast disrupt Iran oil delivery

A mysterious attack on pipelines off Syria’s coast, which a Syrian official said was conducted with the help of a foreign state, disrupted an Iranian crude oil delivery.

On June 22, explosive devices damaged underwater pipelines used to deliver crude oil from tankers to the Baniyas refinery, in the western Syrian governorate of Tartus, causing an oil spill, the official Syrian news agency Sana reported.

The sabotage was “qualitative and professional”, the deputy head of the Syrian Company for Oil Transport told a local radio station, adding that a foreign state co-ordinated with the perpetrators to send a message to Damascus.

TankerTrackers.com, a US company that closely follows Iranian oil shipments to Syria, saw the Iranian-flagged Stark I oil tanker arriving off the Baniyas coast a day after blasts disabled the pipelines.

Syria underwater oil pipelines sabotaged amid fuel shortages

Five underwater pipelines off the coast of Banias in northwestern Syria were attacked in an act of sabotage over the weekend, Syria’s oil ministry has announced.

Although it was not clear who was behind the act and no group has claimed responsibility, Oil Minister Ali Ghanem has called the incident a “terrorist attack”.

Syria has been beset by fuel shortages since the European Union (EU), the UN and the US imposed sanctions on the country, including trade restrictions, travel bans and asset freezes on certain individuals in response to atrocities carried out by the Syrian regime.

In April, images circulated on social media of hundreds of cars waiting in line at a petrol station in Syrian capital Damascus after owners of private cars were given an allowance of 20 litres of fuel every five days.

Last winter, the Syrian regime introduced rationing for cooking gas.

Syria Demands Withdrawal of Turkish Troops From Syrian Territory

As fierce gun battles continued in Idlib, Syria’s Foreign Minister demanded the withdrawal of Turkish troops in the region.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said in a press briefing Tuesday that his country considers Turkey’s military presence in parts of northern Syria as illegal. Muallem then demanded neighboring Turkey to withdraw its troops from the Syrian territories. Yet he asserted that Syria is not interested in a military showdown with Turkey.

Muallem’s remarks came on the sidelines of his five-day visit to the Chinese capital of Beijing, where he met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. Muallem held a press conference with Wang Yi where he made the remarks regarding Turkey’s presence in Syria.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – JUNE 19, 2019: NEW MILITANT ATTACK IN HAMA ENDS IN DISASTER

On June 18, the joint forces of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and Turkish-backed militant groups launched an assault on several positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama.

The so-called “moderate opposition” reportedly used at least two suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive devices. One exploded near SAA positions in Jalamah. Another one was eliminated in the nearby area. At the same time, clashes were reported near Sheikh Hadid, Qiratah and Jub Suleiman.

By June 19, the militant attack had been fully repelled by the SAA. Despite this, pro-militant media outlets claimed that all devices had worked as intended and “Assad regime forces” had suffered dozens of casualties. According to pro-government sources, the militants lost up to 30 killed or injured fighters, and 6 pieces of military equipment, including a battle tank.

The militant advance also triggered a new round of Syrian airstrikes on their infrastructure in southern Idlib and northern Hama.

Syrian pro-government sources confirmed that the SAA positions near Tell Bazzam and al-Kabariyah were shelled by Turkish artillery. The sources claimed that the Turkish observation post near Murak was the source of the fire.

Idlib offensive: Stop the bombs or Syrians will ‘break the borders’

The protest was triggered by the intensified, regime-led military campaign on Syria’s last remaining opposition-held region in northwestern Syria. The offensive has been systematically targeting residential areas and civilian facilities, leaving more than three million people with no safe ground inside the country.

As the world remains indifferent to their suffering, civilians in greater Idlib have launched a campaign to “break the borders”, asking people to march towards the Turkish border. This action threatens Western countries, and Turkey, with a major influx of refugees if they do not live up to their responsibilities to stop the mass slaughter of civilians in Syria.

The Caliphate Project, Made in America. Declassified U.S. Government Documents Confirm the US Supported the Creation of ISIS

Global Research Editor’s Note:

First published in May 2015, this article reveals not only that the ISIS is a creation of US intelligence, it also confirms that the Caliphate Project was designed in Washington.

The newly-declassified document continues:

Yes, you read that correctly:

… there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist Principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime ….

In other words, the powers supporting the Syrian opposition – the West, our Gulf allies, and Turkey wanted an Islamic caliphate in order to challenge Syrian president Assad.

Sure, top U.S. generals – and vice president Vice President Joe Biden – have said that America’s closest allies support ISIS. And mainstream American media have called for direct support of ISIS.

Netanyahu Vows More Preemptive Attacks Against SyriaSays Israel will attack in a 'systematic and consistent manner'

Following Syrian reports that they’d foiled an Israeli attack near the Golan Heights, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to launch even more preemptive attacks against Syria into the future.

Netanyahu said Israel was facing “unending” tests, and that they would continue to attack in a “systematic and consistent manner” to ensure that Syria never establishes any capability to threaten Israel.

In practice Israel has been attacking targets in Syria on a regular basis for months now, and indeed has spent much of the Syrian War feigning neutrality while backing rebel groups, and attacking pro-government forces on every pretext, and often with no pretext at all.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A Russian-American-Israeli Meeting of National Security Advisors in Jerusalem: Syria and Iran on the Table

This month of June, the National Security Advisors of Russia, the US, and Israel, Nikolay Patrushev, John Bolton and Meir Ben-Shabbat, respectively, are expected to meet in Jerusalem to talk about Iran and Syria and what Israel considers the “threat to its security” in the Levant.

High-ranking sources among decision-makers say this:

“Netanyahu runs to his allies to cry on their shoulders when he is the aggressor, as in every single problem in the Levant, particularly when the Israeli military exceeds the limits and crosses red lines. Last year, Russia agreed with Iran to create a kind of safety perimeter for the Russian military to take control along the Quneitra-Golan Heights front. That would have made it possible to ease the situation on the borders and allow President Assad and his allies to concentrate on other fronts. Iran responded positively to the Russian request, following the approval of President Assad”.

RUSSIAN JETS CARRY OUT DEADLY BOMBINGS IN SYRIA'S IDLIB

At least 25 people have been killed in aerial bombardment carried out by Russian jet fighters in Idlib region, with schools and medical centres knocked down during a continued Syrian military offensive.

The rebel stronghold of northwestern Syria despite being part of a buffer-zone deal has come under deadly regime bombardment in recent weeks, sparking fears for its roughly three million residents.

At least 13 people were killed, including women and children, after Russian Sukhoi jets dropped bombs on the village of Jabala in southern Idlib province, residents and civil rescuers told Reuters news agency.

Russian jets were also behind several raids that hit the town of Khan Sheikhoun, Kafr Battikh and several other villages that left at least another 12 civilians dead, according to another local rescuer.

Since the formal defeat of ISIS’ self-proclaimed caliphate and so-called “moderate rebels” in most of Syria, the Middle Eastern country, has largely disappeared from the front-pages of mainstream media outlets. Nonetheless, the narrative management operation to distort the real situation in the war-torn country and demonize the Damascus government and its allies fighting foreign-backed radical militant groups continues.

The upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is an obvious example of the scale and spread of this campaign. The official trailer for the new part of the franchise features “heroic actions” of the White Helmets, “big bad Russians” bombing civilians and a kid in a gas mask apparently signaling the expected usage of “Assad’s chemical weapons” mantra in the story-telling.

SKY NEWS AND THE WESTERN PRESS HAVE ONCE AGAIN FAILED SYRIA

SOURCE: MINT PRESS

Recent storylines from the Western press on the “Idlib” narrative, particularly the extraordinary spate of “on-the-ground” reports from Sky News reporter Alex Crawford, have failed to paint an accurate picture of the reality faced by Syrian civilians.

Brett McGurk – the U.S. government’s Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL — described Idlib as “the largest Al Qaeda safe haven since 9/11,” adding that the presence of Al Qaeda in Idlib was a “huge problem” and had been so “for some time.” Mint Press journalist Whitney Webb covered McGurk’s statements and U.S. policy in Idlib in late 2018.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Normalizing" the presence of militant groups affiliated with Al Qaeda, is just the point of such coverage; so, ultimately, the Western Press and Sky News have been deliberately distorting the truth, to give their readers the impression that it is completely "customary" for radical jihadis be in control of the city, rather than those forces loyal to the Syrian government and its President, Bashir Al-Assad.

SYRIAN WAR REPORT – JUNE 6, 2019: SYRIAN, RUSSIAN FORCES POUND MILITANTS IN GREATER IDLIB

ISIS cells have used an IED to blow up a Syrian Army vehicle on the road between Naamer and al-Khirbet in northern Daraa, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq said on June 4. According to the report, 3 soldiers were killed in the attack. However, these claims have not yet been confirmed by pro-government sources.

This became the first official ISIS announcement of an attack in the province of Daraa since last year when the army and former rebels that had reconciled with the government eliminated ISIS’ local branch, the Khalid ibn al-Walid Army.

The resumption of ISIS attacks in southern Syria may be a sign that the terrorist group’s core hiding in the Syrian and Iraqi deserts has had enough time to restore contacts with its cells in this part of the country. If this is the case, further attacks in the area can be expected.

Video: US-Sponsored Kurdish Militia Burn Wheat Fields in Northern Syria

The Kurdish separatist militia SDF and its affiliates from PYD and Asayish are burning wheat fields in the territories under their occupation northeast of Syria.

Some of the most fertile lands as well as territories rich with oil are under the occupation of the US-sponsored separatist SDF militia. The US and its illegal International Coalition of evil states are preventing the Syrian state from restoring the country from terrorists and separatists.

Russia Intercepts US Spy Plane Off Syrian Coast

While US and NATO warplanes intercept Russian planes in international airspace on a very regular basis, Russia’s own interceptions are fairly rare, and the US is always furious when it happens. That was the case on Tuesday, when a US Navy spy plane started hanging around the Syrian coast.

Russia is very protective of the Syrian coast, and for good reason, as it hosts Russia’s lone Mediterranean naval base. Having US military aircraft hanging around that area, even if it is just a spy plane, was always going to provoke a response.

Russia sent up a fighter jet to intercept the plane. This apparently didn’t take this first couple of times, because the fighter had to intercept the same spy plane three different times in the same area before it finally went away.

Webmaster's Commentary:

OK, let me get my head around this; the US flies over Syrian sovereign territory, close to a Russian air base there, and it is the Russians were out of line?!?

I am sorry, but did these pilots understand just how close, to the keening edge of war, they appeared to be trying to take this country?!?

On orders from their CO?!?!?

It is almost as though the US is deliberately trying to goad Russia into a "supersonic bar fight" over Syria.

And President Trump, a word, please; at this point in its history, the US military does not not have the weaponry; the budget; the troop strength; or the manufacturing right now to ensure a positive outcome to a war against Russia, or China, or both.

NEW ‘CALL OF DUTY’ ENCOURAGES SUPPORT FOR THE WHITE HELMETS

The official trailer for the latest Call of Duty was released a few days ago, and it features the Syria narrative management operation known as the White Helmets depicted in heroic roles. Characters wearing the organization’s signature headgear are seen clearing rubble in part of the trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

To give you an idea how popular the CoD franchise is, as of this writing the official Youtube version of the trailer has 27 million views.

To be clear, the characters in the game are most certainly intended to resemble the White Helmets of Syria, and their presence there is most certainly intended to increase support for and interest in that group. How do I know? Its game writer has explicitly said so.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Kids who score well on computer games, and their families, can expect a call from the US military, praising their gifts, wanting to set up meetings with military recruiters, and encouraging them to enlist.

The propaganda, swirling around this group, is riddled with inaccuracies and outright lies. The Ron Paul Institute, has this to say about them>:

More lies about the White Helmets

Let us also look at what Global Research has to say about them:

What is really happening in Syria; who started the war, and who can you trust to tell the truth?!? The article goes on to state: "Mainstream media coverage of Syria has lately focused on what the U.S. calls “war crimes” in the battle for Aleppo, Syria’s largest city. But most Western media never get any closer to Aleppo than Beirut, which is not even in Syria. For their information, these media often rely on the U.S. government or groups like the White Helmets, who get funding from the U.S. and others attempting to overthrow the Syrian government. As veteran journalist Patrick Cockburn points out:

Unsurprisingly, foreign journalists covering developments in east Aleppo and rebel-held areas of Syria overwhelmingly do so from Lebanon or Turkey. A number of intrepid correspondents who tried to do eyewitness reporting from rebel-held areas swiftly found themselves tipped into the boots of cars or otherwise incarcerated."

The "White Helmets are a CIA Construct

Experience shows that foreign reporters are quite right not to trust their lives even to the most moderate of the armed opposition inside Syria. But, strangely enough, the same media organisations continue to put their trust in the veracity of information coming out of areas under the control of these same potential kidnappers and hostage takers. They would probably defend themselves by saying they rely on non-partisan activists, but all the evidence is that these can only operate in east Aleppo under license from the al- Qaeda-type groups."

And here are some other reports:

The White Helmets, to control the war crime scenes throughout the Syrian Theatre of War

Busted: Syria's White Helmets, are the CIA's "Secret Weapon to Aid Isis.

Any questions about why this group could be so misrepresented in computer games young adults love to play, should be very much understood: the US military wants younger people who play computer games well, to join it.

Just as the Chinese government is attempting to wipe the memory of Tianamen Square from the minds its citizens, the US government, and military are working very hard, to insure that the real horrors of war, are never quite presented in computer games for what they are.

I would label both attempts as RFWF (Replace facts with fantasy)

US Slams Russia Over Unsafe, "Irresponsible" Spy Plane Intercept Near Syria

The US and Russia exchanged barbs after a Russian fighter jet allegedly made a dangerous high-speed pass that threatened a US Navy spy plane during an intercept over the Mediterranean Sea near Syria on Tuesday, the U.S. Sixth Fleet said, but Moscow said its pilot had behaved responsibly.

“While the Russian aircraft was operating in international airspace, this interaction was irresponsible,” the Sixth Fleet said in a statement urging Russians "to behave within international standards set to prevent incidents."
