Fed Admits "Stress Tests" Are a Sham

The "stress tests" were supposed to triage those banks worth saving from those which were already too far gone to save.

But as Nouriel Roubini, FDIC chief Sheila Bair, Nobel economist Paul Krugman, former senior S&L regulator William Black and many others said, the "stress tests" are a sham.

Well, they've been proven right.

The Fed said today that - instead of letting the insolvent banks fail - which is what virtually all of the independent experts are recommending (see this for example), the Fed will rescue all banks which fail the stress test.

It appears that among the real reasons for the university’s attempts to discipline me since September 2005 and for its recent most harsh actions against me under President Allan Rock’s mandate might be the administration’s opposition to my political views about the Palestine-Israel conflict, which, starting in 2005, I have expressed in articles, on radio, in my blog postings, at public venues, and in my classes. In September 2005 the dean cancelled my Physics and the Environment course following a complaint (regarding an email comment about Zionism), channelled through the university’s Canadian Studies Institute director Pierre Anctil to the VP-Academic.

the key to the opposition to ahmadinejad

The 23 countries that walked out of the Geneva Conference during Ahmadinejad’s speech are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The 27 EU members are the above plus Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, which had already decided not to send delegates at all. The other 5 countries which had already decided not to send delegates at all are Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand and the US. So the formula for the bloc claiming that Ahmadinejad is ‘racist’ is: EU, plus Israel, plus the surviving ‘Anglo-Saxon’ or ‘English-speaking’ — i.e., white colonial — states: Australia & New Zealand, the USA & Canada.

ACLU: Pentagon to release images of prisoner abuse

The Defense Department will release a "substantial number" of photos depicting abuse of prisoners by U.S. personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, the American Civil Liberties Union said late Thursday.

The photos will be made available by May 28, the ACLU said, citing a letter dated Thursday from the Justice Department to a federal judge in New York. The photos' release is in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the ACLU in 2004 and will include images from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan at locations other than Abu Ghraib, the ACLU said.

Outrage at 'skin and bones' Miss Universe model

Australia's Miss Universe competition found itself under scrutiny yesterday as doctors and dieticians questioned the inclusion of a finalist they claimed was severely underweight.

"I would certainly want to be doing an assessment of her diet to make sure she doesn't have some type of eating disorder," she said.

The Great Credit Card Battle To Come

What's happening to credit card lending is a smaller replay of what happened to mortgage lending. For years, banks used every gimmick possible to get the public to use their cards -- regardless of the credit worthiness of the customer. They lured borrowers with low "teaser" rates. They told borrowers they could get by paying minimum balances.

In my view the stress test survey is just a “show” for the investment markets and in the end really doesn’t mean very much because credit quality is still deteriorating. FLASHBACK - The mysterious deaths of top microbiologists

Now, statistically, it's possible, even likely, that one or two of these microbiologists legitimately were killed in random accidents. But for so many to die in such a short while exceeds all reasonable bounds of statistics. Prudence would demand an investigation, not the "ho hum" attitude of the government which even today continues to issue dire warnings to the general population of how much we are all in danger from "bioterrorism".

So, let's take a moment and step away from the perpetual fear-mongering of the media (and Rumsfeld) as they assure us another attack IS coming (with a certainty which suggests inside information on the subject) and assume for a moment that some party has indeed decided to "liquidate" weapons research infectious disease experts.

I call on all nations to speak out against torture in all its forms and to make ending torture an essential part of their diplomacy. Mexico flu deaths raise worries of global epidemic

Scientists were trying to determine if the deaths involved the same new strain of swine flu that sickened seven people in Texas and California — a disturbing disease that combines pig, bird and human viruses in a way that researchers have not seen before.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Oh? CDC was talking about recombinant viruses back in 2005.

Back in 2004, we were being propagandized that Bird Flu was the next pandemic.

Gene studies showed that so-called Bird Flu appeared to be nearly identical with the 1918 Spanish Flu

Which is rather nerve-wracking because in 2005 it was admitted that scientists were intentionally recreating the 1918 Spanish Flu virus!

But the predicted pandemic didn't happen because Bird Flu isn't that contagious. It needed to be blended with a more infectious form of flu, like swine flu (Used as a bio-weapon by the CIA against Cuba), to became a real slate-wiper!

And wonder of wonders, here it is!

In 2006, it was reported that scientists were intentionally creating bird flu and swine flu hybrids in the labs!

Which leads to asking how it is that this new flu epidemic explodes into view right after Fort Detrick admits that some of the nasty little beasties they have been working on went missing!

Anti-Semitic as a Matter of Law

So what constitutes the law on anti-Semitism according to this Virginia court? The court cites a document from Israel's Yad Vashem, which defines anti-Semitism as including the following actions:

Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as a collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other social institutions.

Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.

Have we really sunk so low as to seriously ask, Does torture work?

Why, then, torture? Why extract reams of unreliable information which sends thousands of other operatives scurrying about the globe in futile attempts to nail it down, especially when actionable intelligence was already being extracted through other interrogative means?

Why? I can think of no reason other than nakedly brutal revenge -- a deep-seated animalistic urge to inflict pain for pain caused. True confessions, false confessions, good information or bad information -- all of it, to the architects, at their deepest inhuman level (scarier yet, perhaps all too human), was essentially irrelevant. The IMF: Raping The World, One Poor Nation at a Time

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been described as one of the enforcers of globalization. Nations who receive IMF assistance are often forced to surrender more sovereignty and further open up their borders to international banks and multinational corporations. Much of their wealth is then sucked dry by foreign predators with its resources and population essentially becoming the collateral for such financial aid. As a result of the global economic crisis, many more nations are having to turn to the IMF for help. At the recent G-20 Summit in London, the IMF’s role was expanded and its powers enhanced. There was little mention of its failed policies and its less then stellar record of effectively promoting development and democracy around the world.

Printing Police Lies

The policing of the G20 protests at the beginning of this month was routine. Policemen hiding their identification numbers and beating up peaceful protesters is as much a part of British life as grey skies and red buses. Across 20 years of protests, I have seen policemen swapping their jackets to avoid identification, hurling people against vans and into walls and whomping old ladies over the head with batons. A friend had his head repeatedly bashed against the bonnet of a police van; he was then charged with criminal damage to the van. I have seen an entire line of police turn round to face the other way when private security guards have started beating people up.

America's money story

The United States' monetary system is as unique and intricate, as it is fallacious. To break it down into simplest terms, money is created out of debt. When the U.S. government wants money, they contact the Federal Reserve and request money. The Federal Reserve then requests the same amount in Government Bonds, or in layman's terms, debt. The government prints emblems onto paper in exchange for different paper with different emblems. Once the transaction is complete, the U.S. dollars are now legal tender and deposited in a commercial banking system. This money is then lent out to borrowers who deposit the money into their bank account. But, this loan is not possible without interest.

Lieberman: Wishing for World War III?

Apple Gets Its Own Trojan Viruses for the First Time

A curious falsehood has surrounded Mac computers over the last decade, as they have resurged onto the market. People believe that Macs are immune to the malware, viruses, and worms that have wrought havoc on PCs.

In reality, OS X is not much more or less secure than Windows Vista -- rather it is Apple's small market share that has protected it. Since Mac attacks would have to be custom-made, there just hasn't been much interest among Black Hats to attack them. Kevin Haley, a director of security response at Symantec, states, "The bad guys generally go toward the biggest target, what will get them the biggest bang for their buck."

However, with surging market share and pop icon status, the Macs are suddenly finding themselves under attack.

David Gregory suggests Bush 'went out of his way' to follow laws on torture

In a puzzling remark that seems to demonstrate the extent to which the mainstream media tries to "balance" discussions of controversial issues, NBC's David Gregory suggested Thursday that the Bush Administration issued memorandums outlining the torture of detainees out of great respect for the law.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In dealing with the abuses of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the great reporter Edward R. Murrow stated that sometimes there are stories where there simply isn't an alternate point of view, nor should there be.

Torture is one such story.

Torture is evil. Torture is illegal.

There is no alternative point of view (except in fictional TV shows), and eternal shame on those who try to pretend otherwise.

The United States executed Japanese officers who waterboarded captured American pilots. US law calls for the death penalty for those who commit torture resulting in death, as we know has happened.

Shame on Barack Obama for his hypocrisy of standing up before AIPAC promising to oppose "Holocaust Denial" at the same time he covers up for torturers in our own government.

FLASHBACK - The truth is "hate speech" only to those who have something to hide

The current focus on the Israeli spy ring is about crimes committed against our nation by a foreign government, plain and simple, and whether one opposes those crimes or is accessory to those crimes by seeking to conceal them. There can be a no more dangerous path than for our government, our media, and our citizens than to ignore the presence of the largest spy ring ever uncovered within our nation simply because it is connected with a "protected" nation presumed to be above reproach or criticism.

In exchange for money, a certain group of people have agreed to let your kids be killed. That group is the United States Congress. And for the last several years, many of them have been accepting money from AIPAC, a supposed lobbying group that stands exposed as a spy operation for a foreign government, in order to promote that foreign government's agenda, which includes war in the Mideast, waged against that foreign government's enemies.

This selling of America's children to a foreign government to be that government's mercenaries has to rank as the greatest single betrayal of a people by their government in all of history.

Why would the US Congress, which supposedly exists to serve the will of the AMERICAN people, be obeying the will of Israel?

Well, maybe because Israel's PACs, including lobbying/spying organization AIPAC, are PAYING THEM TO! (And may have used money looted from American investors by Bernie Madoff to do it!)

You heard me. Members of AIPAC, the organization suspected of spying for Israel, donate vast sums of money to the members of US Congress. And the US Congress has sold our young men and women in uniform to go off and fight and die in wars Israel has created.

The Guantanamo Bay Torture Memos: For Kids!

“Hold on,” the little boy interrupted. “Just so I’m clear, when you say his ‘mean parents wouldn’t allow him,’ you’re talking about international law, right? Like, it’s international law that forbids Americans from using torture, so in the story when it complains about ‘mean parents,’ it’s really about the international law?” I smiled at the small boy.

“Well, aren’t you precocious? But, yes, that’s right, I suppose that’s the comparison the book is going for.”

“Sort of an unfair metaphor, if you ask me. Takes a pretty complex situation and oversimplifies it to the point of absurdity, like it’s forcing the reader to side with the-”

EIR learned from several sources in Washington that the White House makes its possible to prevent three bodies of press from revealing the origins of the falsified documents of the government native of Niger, intended to make believe that Saddam Hussein sought to obtain significant quantities of uranium native of Niger to produce nuclear weapons. After having taken knowledge of these documents, appeared in Italy at the end of 2001, Dick Cheney asked the information agencies to check information, which was to lead to the mission of the Wilson ambassador in Niger in February 2002.

The Shamelessness of Jane Harman

Confronted with clear evidence that she tried to obstruct justice in the case of Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman — two former top AIPAC officials slated to go on trial for espionage on June 2 — Rep. Jane Harman, a California Democrat, did what politicians usually do when forced to face unpleasant facts: she brazened it out. In a response to the Congressional Quarterly piece by Jeff Stein that has proved such an entertaining embarrassment, she brayed:

“These claims are an outrageous and recycled canard, and have no basis in fact. I never engaged in any such activity. Those who are peddling these false accusations should be ashamed of themselves.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is another aspect to this case people have not commented on. In ending the phone call with the suspected with "This conversation never happened" Harman betrays a comfortable familiarity with the contents, suggesting that these sorts of quid pro quos with AIPAC are a very common occurrence in DC.

On Tuesday evening, I watched Anderson Cooper and Bill O'Reilly utter the same euphemism for torture. "Harsh" techniques, they said. And then, to each of their guests they posed the question of whether or not these "harsh interrogation techniques" worked and shouldn't that be an important part of judging their merit? I felt dirty just listening to them.

Harman: I Never Intervened In AIPAC Case

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yeah, and NOW wiretapping is a real problem, isn't it, Jane; now that you have been hoisted on the petard you yourself approved of!

I love how she gets flustered at 3 minutes!

The fact is that what AIPAC wanted, charged reduced against Rosen and Weissman, did in fact happen. The charges of espionage were indeed reduced to merely being in possession of classified documents.

So, if Jane did not obstruct justice, she is saying someone else did.

The losses become real if the principal isn’t returned.

Tony Blair calls on world to wage war on militant Islam

Tony Blair has said he does not regret leading Britain to war in Iraq when he was Prime Minister and has called on the world to take on and defeat Islamic extremists. He believes that, without intervention, the problem will continue to grow in countries such as Afghanistan.

He called for a battle to be waged against militant Islam similar to that fought against revolutionary communism.

In an address last night to a forum on religion and politics in Chicago, Mr Blair said that the world today faced a struggle posed by "an extreme and misguided form of Islam", which threatened the majority of Muslims as well as non-Muslims.

Israel's Gaza report 'lacks credibility': Amnesty

The Israeli army's investigation into its recent war in Gaza "lacks credibility" and is no substitute for an independent probe, London-based rights organisation Amnesty International said Thursday.

The Israeli army on Wednesday defended its conduct during the 22-day offensive against Hamas, saying five investigations carried out by the military found the army "operated in accordance with international law."

But Amnesty said the army briefing "lacks crucial details" and failed to explain the overwhelming majority of civilian deaths during the war, including incidents involving shooting at medical facilities.

The sun's cooling down - so what does that mean for us?

Most scientists believe humans are the main culprit when it comes to global warming, and Weiss is no exception. He points out that the ice remained in Europe long after solar activity picked up from the Maunder minimum. Even if we had another, similar low, he says, it would probably only cause temperatures on Earth to drop by the order of a tenth of a degree Celsius - peanuts compared to recent hikes.

Temperature Monitors Report Wide-Scale Global Cooling

The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years.

Cow genome project designed SPECIFICALLY to make genetic engineering appear innocuous

BBC Science - Cow genome 'to transform farming' - Victoria Gill -The genome of a female Hereford cow has been sequenced, which could be a starting point for major improvements in the agricultural industry.

[Major improvements? More teats? A bigger udder? Wheels? Ag geneticists lamented they would much rather be working on something more specifically designed to kill people, -a hybrid flu virus, or a cold-hardy malaria mosquito, -but for now "cows is where the research money is, so we do cows."]

Finally! An Alternative to Murder/Suiciding - German parents 'ran out of money' - Abandoned Children

BBC A German couple who abandoned three young children in an Italian pizzeria on Sunday have told police they fled because they had no money, reports say.

Ina Caterina Remhof, the 26-year-old mother, and her partner Sascha Schmidt, 24, said they had to eat scraps of food from bins, the Ansa news agency said.

[There's a photo of the couple -unlike when economic casualties commit murder/suicide to remedy their fate. So, go ahead satisfy your sick voyeuristic human nature and go see how fat she keeps herself on dumpster diving. I do hope someone keeps a file for posterity and when the kids grow up. Has someone died yet -for diving into someone else's dumpster? No doubt!]

Yahoo pulls the plug on GeoCities - Indicating it is near bankruptcy

BBC News -Yahoo is to close its personal web hosting site GeoCities later this year.

In a statement, the firm says it will no longer be accepting new customers and will focus on helping "customers build new relationships online".

Yahoo bought GeoCities for $3.57bn at the height of the dotcom boom in 1999.

[This is an astonishing admission of just how broke Yahoo! really is. They are saying they cannot afford to operate the servers and pay the modest staff dedicated to Geocities web hosting, which does charge a range of fees for its premium services. The admission is tantamount to saying, We are imploding!]

And, once Barack Obama was elected, I called for us to come together in support of America's new president. I never imagined that anybody could be worse than George W. Bush. It begins to appear that I may have been wrong about that, too.

I want to like Obama. In fact, I still do ... personally. After all, he is just so ... likeable. Problem is, things are happening on his watch that continue to fracture America and, in fact, seem to be accelerating her plunge into the political, social and economic abyss.

Killing Civilians

Forgotten? It's true that we forget these killings easily -- often we don't notice them in the first place -- since they don't seem to impinge on our lives. Perhaps that's one of the benefits of fighting a war on the periphery of empire, halfway across the planet in the backlands of some impoverished country.

One problem, though: the forgetting doesn't work so well in those backlands. When your child, wife or husband, mother or father is killed, you don't forget.

Pelosi briefed on waterboarding in '02

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

Guilty of Being Poor

Guilty of Being Poor
by Eric Ruder / April 23rd, 2009

The jailers of the 19th century — even in the pre-Civil War South — largely abandoned the practice of imprisoning people for falling into debt as counterproductive and ultimately barbaric. In the 1970s and ’80s, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that incarcerating people who can’t pay fines because of poverty violates the U.S. Constitution.

Apparently, though, some states and county jails never got the memo. Welcome to the debtors’ prisons of the 21st century.
