Last night, the Transport Secretary apologised "unreservedly" for what he described as an "inadvertent administrative error" and repaid £384 to the parliamentary authorities.

China's Arithmetic When It Comes to the Dollar

Providing leadership to the world’s increasingly interconnected economy is by no means an easy task, and maybe that’s why the world is voting against America holding the world’s reserve Currency Conch any longer. Timmy Geithner’s effectiveness with the Chinese translators overseas this morning is borderline laughable.

There was a time when the Wizards of Wall Street’s Oz could fly overseas and make a comment like “we are committed to a strong dollar” and it would actually matter. In Crisis, Banks Dig In for Fight Against Rules

As the financial crisis entered one of its darkest phases in October, a handful of the nation’s largest banks began holding daily telephone sessions. Murmurs were already emanating from Washington about the need for a wide-ranging regulatory overhaul, and Wall Street executives girded for a fight.

Atop the agenda during their calls: how to counter an expected attempt to rein in credit-default swaps and other derivatives — the sophisticated and profitable financial instruments that were intended to limit risk but instead had helped take the economy to the brink of disaster.

Poor Little TARP Banks

The big banks, like Bank of America, Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase, have been getting just about anything they want out of Washington these days. There is one thing, however, that so far they have been denied: the ability to get instant refunds on taxes paid on past profits up to five years back, or “carry-back” relief.

In the economic stimulus bill (H.R. 1) Congress extended carry-back relief to businesses with less than $15 million in annual revenues that have not taken TARP money. The Triple California Housing Threat: Low, Mid, and Upper Range Housing Distress Ladder. How the Housing Implosion will Spread to Higher Priced Neighborhoods.

The housing market in California is splintering into various broken segments. In one area, you have lower priced beaten down homes flying off the market like pancakes. Yet in these areas, you have to wonder what will happen once the major discounts and inventory run out? Next, you have mid-priced areas that are selling in low numbers but at relatively stable prices. This is the next market to tank because of the large amount of Alt-A and Pay Option ARMs hovering in those markets.

We are not a virtuous nation. God and fate have not blessed us above others. Victory is not assured. War is neither glorious nor noble. Every proposal of the Global Warming/Climate Change lobby involves control. The control of energy production, use by individuals, corporations and governments, and the control of the design, type and the use of devices that use energy. Naturally, this is to control the use of energy by the ordinary citizen. President B. Hussein Obama used 9,000 gallons of aviation kerosene to visit Iowa on Earth Day. The hypocrisy of that can be felt in the very air. Do as I say, not as I do.

Obama’s new war doctrine: ‘Cyber dominance’

The US military is moving ahead with plans to create its first “cyber command” designed to bolster America’s potential to wage digital warfare as well as defend against mounting cyber threats, officials said on Friday.

After President Barack Obama announced Friday his plans to overhaul cyber security policy, Defense Secretary Robert Gates was expected to soon formally propose the new cyber command that will be overseen by a four-star officer, Pentagon officials told AFP.

The move reflects a shift in military strategy with “cyber dominance” now part of US war doctrine and growing alarm over the perceived threat posed by digital espionage coming from China, Russia and elsewhere.

Cybersecurity Is Framework For Total Government Regulation & Control Of Our Lives

he Obama administration’s new Cybersecurity system will only make the Internet more vulnerable to attack, while creating the framework for a massively upgraded government surveillance grid that will control and regulate every aspect of our daily lives through the implementation of “smart” technology.

Obama’s announcement of the new cybersecurity grid dovetails with a recently introduced Senate bill, the Cybersecurity Act of 2009, that would hand the president the power to shut down the entire Internet in the event of a “cybersecurity” crisis.

In Pakistan, an exodus that is beyond biblical

The language was already biblical; now the scale of what is happening matches it. The exodus of people forced from their homes in Pakistan's Swat Valley and elsewhere in the country's north-west may be as high as 2.4 million, aid officials say. Around the world, only a handful of war-spoiled countries – Sudan, Iraq, Colombia – have larger numbers of internal refugees. The speed of the displacement at its height – up to 85,000 people a day – was matched only during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This is now one of the biggest sudden refugee crises the world has ever seen.

Hawaii's Islam Day resolution stirs passions here, on Mainland

House Concurrent Resolution 100, establishing a single day this year to acknowledge "the rich religious, scientific, cultural, and artistic contributions" of the Islamic world, ignited the passions of those concerned about the connection between the Islam religion and Muslim extremists responsible for the 9/11 attacks and other terrorist acts around the world.

Odious debt

In international law, odious debt is a legal theory which holds that the national debt incurred by a regime for purposes that do not serve the best interests of the nation, such as wars of aggression, should not be enforceable. Such debts are thus considered by this doctrine to be personal debts of the regime that [are] incurred [by]them and not debts of the state. In some respects, the concept is analogous to the invalidity of contracts signed under coercion.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Under this principle, We The People are not liable for the costs of the wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq and Somalia; indeed pretty much every war since WW2.

Nor are we liable for the $12.8 trillion spent on the bailouts, since these funds did not benefit the public, but only the banks and brokerages.

17,000 US troops in Afghanistan by mid-July

The Obama White House says that the 21,000 additional troops are to reinforce security ahead of the August 20 presidential elections, and are to support the NATO-led troops which have struggled to fight an escalating insurgency there.

The surge in US troops in Afghanistan comes amid frosty relations between Kabul and Washington, over the US bombing of civilians about a month ago.

The raid which left some 150 people including 95 children dead is dubbed as the deadliest incident for Afghan civilians since the 2001 US-led invasion.

Little of this will be new to you if you're a long time Brasscheck TV viewer, but it's interesting to see that some of this material is finally appearing in a hardcover book available in US book stores.

Not surprisingly, this serious piece of reporting is being completely ignored by the news media in the US.

MPs' expenses: Alistair Darling billed us for two homes at the same time

Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, claimed parliamentary expenses for a flat that he let to tenants while also claiming living allowances for his grace and favour home in Downing Street, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

In July 2007, Mr Darling submitted a £1,004 claim for a service charge on his south London flat 10 days after he became Chancellor. It covered the six-month period to the end of December 2007.

At the time, Mr Darling moved into Downing Street and began to claim second home allowances for his grace-and-favour apartments, meaning that costs relating to two of the Chancellor's homes were being met by the taxpayer.
