Video: Protesters Storm Stage and Interrupt Larry Summers for Conflict of Interest Payments

Larry Summers' address before the Economic Club in Washington D.C. on Thursday was interrupted for several minutes as a group of protesters jumped on the stage and held up a large sign behind Summers' head that said, "We Want Our $$$ Back!"

The protest came as Summers was addressing a question on whether a second stimulus would be needed, and it stopped the conversation in its tracks.

"Larry Summers is part of the problem," screamed one of the activists. "He is a toxic mess." They continued to heckle him for his conflict of interests in making money from industry groups and/or business favored by bailouts.

The smooth criminal transition from Bush/Cheney to Obama

The smooth criminal transition from Bush/Cheney to Obama
By Larry Chin

To sober, clear-eyed observers of history and political deception, the ascension of Barack Obama held the promise for unprecedented new dangers: a revitalized New World Order, led by the Anglo-American empire’s neoliberal criminal faction and an iconic, deceptive new facilitator; and a continuation of Bush/Cheney criminality and war, under smarter and much more effective management.

Now, just months into their tenure, the Barack Obama administration has more than fulfilled the murderous promises he made to his elite constituency, deepening the mass destruction of Bush/Cheney, while charming its victims all over the world into enjoying their own demise.

Sedation Linked to Birth Defects

Ten girls who were heavily sedated while living at a care home during the 1970s and 1980s went on to have children with a range of birth defects, a BBC investigation has revealed.

As teenagers at the Church of England-run Kendall House home in Gravesend, Kent, the 10 were restrained with huge doses of tranquilizers and other drugs, according to Radio 4’s Today programme.

It is feared hundreds of other girls who were in UK care homes during the same period and suffered the same mistreatment may also be at risk of having children with birth defects.

Latest Accused Scam Artist: A Lay Bishop in the Mormon Church

There's preaching from the pulpit. And then there's the less holy practice of pitching from the pulpit. Arapahoe County investment manager Shawn R. Merriman becomes the latest accused scam artist to use his standing in a church to help attract investors.

Merriman, named in a federal lawsuit this week for allegedly bilking investors of up to $20 million, was a lay bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Church officials in Salt Lake City said Thursday that Merriman was excommunicated from the church two weeks ago for "conduct unbecoming a member."

America's Imperial Wars: We Need to See the Sickening Reality

The project opened my eyes to something that had never occurred to me: my country's army was killing civilians. And it wasn't just killing them. It was killing them, and maiming them, in ways that were almost unimaginable in their horror: napalm, phosphorus, anti-personnel bombs that threw out spinning flechettes that ripped through the flesh like tiny buzz saws, and gunships that randomly spewed out so many projectiles that everything within the range of several football fields was killed or maimed almost instantly (all weapons still in use now)

I learned that scientists like what I at the time wanted to become were actually working on projects to make these weapons even more lethal, for example trying to make napalm more sticky so it would burn longer on exposed flesh.

Is humanity finally outgrowing religion?

Of course, this trend is far more dramatic in most European countries that now have nearly totally empty churches. "Preaching to the choir" is what most Christian European churches are now quite literally doing.

One can only speculate about this trend, but surely it has to do with the identification of churches with the politics of war, particularly during the murder in the name of God Bush years and similar murder in the name of God policies of the Israeli lunatic fringe right wing. Naturally, Palestinian "holy warriors" simply reinforce the documented fact that religion has become a synonym of war mongering religious fanatics.

Oil Companies Dividing and Conquering Nigeria - Nigeria oil unrest 'kills 1,000'

The New York Times - Violence in Nigeria's oil region left 1,000 people dead and cost $24bn (£16bn) last year, a report says, according to an official and activist.

Ledum Mitee, chairman of the Niger Delta Presidential Technical Committee, says the figures only cover the first nine months of 2008.

Freedom Rider: Phony Nuclear Disarmament

President Obama sent a near-declaration of war to Iran, all wrapped up in greetings for the Iranian New Year. The message may have looked like “a smiley faced video” in which the “president appeared to be very amiable and wished peace, love and harmony,” but was actually “nothing more than a well executed propaganda ploy intended to give him cover on the day he announces his true intentions.” Then he told Europeans, ''As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward with a missile defense system that is cost-effective and proven.'' Beneath the charm, “Barack Obama repeats the worst, most untruthful and belligerent policies of the Bush administration.”

Treasury tells US investors to buy American

US private investors are to be encouraged to "Buy American" as a number of financial houses prepare to launch investment bonds that will allow individuals to part-fund the American government's $1 trillion (£682bn) toxic asset clean-up.

"It's giving the guy on Main Street an equal seat at the table next to the big guys,"

(*...if private investors are burned, there
is likely to be some political fall-out.
But even with the promise of substantial returns given the depressed state of the US property market at the moment, quite what the take-up by retail investors will be remains to be seen.)

Polish politician fumes over "gay" elephant in zoo

"We didn't pay 37 million zlotys (7.6 million pounds) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there," Michal Grzes, a conservative councillor in the city of Poznan in western Poland, was quoted as saying.

"We were supposed to have a herd, but as Ninio prefers male friends over females how will he produce offspring?" said Grzes, who is from the right-wing opposition Law and Justice party.

Or consider the Jewish cigar makers in early 20th century New York City each contributing a small sum to hire a man to sit with them as they worked - reading aloud the classic works of Yiddish literature. The leader of the cigar-makers, Samuel Gompers, would later become the first president of the American Federation of Labor. And those like him would become part of a Jewish tradition that profoundly shaped the politics, social conscience, and cultural course of 20th century America. It is certainly impossible to imagine liberalism, the civil rights movement, or the Vietnam protests without the Jewish left.

With Legions of Two-Bit Nepotism Jobs at Stake - Municipalities Turn to Fees to Fill Budget Gaps

The New York Times - David Segal After her sport utility vehicle sideswiped a van in early February, Shirley Kimel was amazed at how quickly a handful of police officers and firefighters in Winter Haven, Fla., showed up. But a real shock came a week later, when a letter arrived from the city billing her $316 for the cost of responding to the accident.

Such cash-per-crash ordinances tend to infuriate motorists, and they often generate bad press, but a lot of cities are finding them hard to resist. With the economy flailing and budgets strained, state and local governments are being creative about ways to raise money. And the go-to idea is to invent a fee — or simply raise one.

"Liquidate the Banks; Fire the Executives!"

On Tuesday, a congressional panel headed by ex-Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren released a report on Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's handling of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). Warren was appointed to lead the five-member Congressional Oversight Panel (COP) in November by Senate majority leader Harry Reid. From the opening paragraph on, the Warren report makes clear that Congress is frustrated with Geithner's so-called "Financial Rescue Plan" and doesn't have the foggiest idea of what he is trying to do. Here are the first few lines of "Assessing Treasury's Strategy: Six Months of TARP":

Why Europe Won't Fight

"No one will say this publicly, but the true fact is we are all talking about our exit strategy from Afghanistan. We are getting out. It may take a couple of years, but we are all looking to get out."

Thus did a "senior European diplomat" confide to The New York Times during Obama's trip to Strasbourg.

Europe is bailing out on us. Afghanistan is to be America's war.

During what the Times called a "fractious meeting," NATO agreed to send 3,000 troops to provide security during the elections and 2,000 to train Afghan police. Thin gruel beside Obama's commitment to double U.S. troop levels to 68,000.

Why won't Europe fight?

The Undeclared Economic War Against Us

Sometimes the truth is so terrifying that people will not let it register no matter how conclusively the evidence and demonstrations add up.

The following article showing once again the pattern of covert economic warfare by powerful international money interests against us, is just one more drop in the scales of public opinion that, for all the weight on the side of truth, still refuses to tip.

So let me state it for you.

Old NASA Tapes Reveal Stunning New Moon Images; Resolution Unparalleled

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- In an abandoned McDonald’s restaurant on NASA Ames property in Mountain View, a pirate flag is taped to the window. Inside, it gets even stranger.

Three researchers huddle around a wheezing 45-year-old Ampex FR-900A tape machine, a one-of-a-kind reel to reel 2-inch model designed to record data for the National Security Agency. It now sits where people used to wolf down Big Macs.

G20 assault: how Metropolitan police tried to manage a death

Late last Friday, after investigators from the IPCC had spoken to detectives from City police, the commission which claims it is the most powerful civilian oversight body in the world, was preparing to say it did not need to launch an inquiry into the deathduring one of the most controversial recent policing operations.

But the release of the video by the Guardian this week, which revealed Mr Tomlinson was subjected to an unprovoked attack by a Met riot squad officer minutes before he died, has forced the IPCC to step up to the demand that it launch a full independent inquiry.

Ian Tomlinson Death Confirms CCTV Control is Not for All!

As everyone knows, the UK (and the US soon) is almost drowning in CCTV's, they are everywhere. If you throw a cigarette or sweet wrapper onto the street, it is recorded and you will be fined if caught. Bus stops have hidden cameras to catch vandals. Yet despite this incident happening in a busy street, the police have been unable to find a CCTV recording of the officer coming into contact with Ian Tomlinson. Apparently they have shots of Tomlinson coming towards them and walking away, but a very convenient gap in between.

US Navy Physicist warns of possibly 'several decades of crushing cold temperatures and global famine'

“The sun has gone very quiet as it transitions to Solar Cycle 24.

“Since the current transition now exceeds 568 spotless days, it is becoming clear that sun has undergone a state change. It is now evident that the Grand Maxima state that has persisted during most of the 20th century has come to an abrupt end.

“(The sun) might (1) revert to the old solar cycles or (2) the sun might go even quieter into a “Dalton Minimum” or a Grand Minima such as the “Maunder Minimum”. It is still a little early to predict which way it will swing. Each of these two possibilities holds a great threat to our nation.

Pirates There and Pirates Here: The Plunder Goes On

While the press is mesmerized by the pirates off the coast of Somalia, today it was reported the US military has found no link between those “bad guys” with terrorism — they should be paying more attention to the real plunder at home.

Warning: a new wave of bank bailouts are coming.

How do I know? There was a lead article in the NY Times business section reporting on “stress” tests being given to banks by Tim Geithner’s posse

We said from the beginning the stress tests were a complete sham. Just look at the numbers. 200 examiners for 19 banks?

The Fight For Health Care Reform May Already Be Lost–Unless….

The National Journal, a policy magazine read widely in Congress has a cover story about mounting opposition to what’s called a “public option,” a plan that would cover everyone like Medicare but from birth. The unions are for it. The people need it, especially the tens of millions without health insurance. The insurance lobbyists are against it along with Republicans.

Reports The Journal: “The current struggle is part of the long ideological tug-of-war over the appropriate role of government health care.”

I guess government administered health care is “ok” for members of Congress, and the military, and people over 65 but not younger people and people in need. (Remember: we pay into these funds. It is our money!)

That Bow

Obama's been globe-trotting and claiming his youthful experience in a Muslim land has given him a greater understanding of Islam. Clearly, this is not true as it is STRICTLY forbidden to bow to anyone (or thing) but God in Islam. To top that off, he bowed to perhaps the least respected leader in the eyes of most Muslims/Arabs.
