"Too many people are only willing to defend rights that are personally important to them. It's selfish ignorance, and it's exactly why totalitarian governments are able to get away with trampling on people. Freedom does not mean freedom just for the things I think I should be able to do. Freedom is for all of us. If people will not speak up for other people's rights, there will come a day when they will lose their own." -- Tony Lawrence (apl@world.std.com) 12/28/95

Baker Hughes’ CEO Warns Of Three Hard Truths About The Energy Transition

Fossil fuels are here to stay. This is the message one oilfield major CEO had for those watching the surge of gas prices in Europe, some with trepidation, others with fascination. They are here to stay because they help ensure a country's energy security. "We think there's three hard truths," Simonelli told CNBC in an interview this week. "Firstly, we've got to work together, accelerate the move towards decarbonization and also eliminating emissions. Secondly, hydrocarbons are here to stay … and natural gas, in fact, is a key element. And thirdly, we've got to do it together, collaborate and actually adopt the new technologies that are available."

Kids went hungry at one Philly school this week because of staff shortages: ‘It’s inhumane’

Children at one city school went hungry Thursday because of staff shortages hitting the Philadelphia School District and an apparent central office operational failure.

No breakfast or lunch ever arrived to feed children at Mitchell Elementary in Southwest Philadelphia — and it wasn’t the first time this term meals failed to arrive at the school.

District staff told Mitchell at 9 a.m. Thursday that neither food nor staff would be sent to the school at 55th and Kingsessing, according to a letter sent to parents by the principal and obtained by The Inquirer.

“As soon as stores opened, I ordered pizza for 400 students to attempt lunch service,” Stephanie Andrewlevich, the Mitchell principal, wrote. “Some of the pizzas arrived and were served to students, some have not arrived as of 2:15 p.m. students were not served.”

Biden sinks in swing districts

Sudden doubts about President Biden's competence — on Afghanistan, immigration and COVID — are driving double-digit drops in his approval in private polling in swing House seats, The Cook Political Report's Amy Walter writes.

Why it matters: "[T]hese early mistakes go directly to the very rationale of his presidency; that it would be low drama and high competence."

Besides those setbacks, Biden "looks more like a helpless bystander than an experienced Capitol Hill deal maker, watching from the sidelines as his party struggles with internal divisions," Walters writes.

"For many voters," Walters adds, "things in Washington look like more of the same; politicians squabbling instead of solving problems."

NASA urged to avoid space station gap

NASA needs to ensure that commercial space stations are ready before the International Space Station is retired to avoid a “space station gap” with geopolitical consequences, industry officials and other advisers warn.

NASA’s low Earth orbit commercialization strategy calls for the development of one or more commercial space stations by late this decade, allowing NASA to transition research currently done on the ISS to those facilities and then retire the ISS, likely around 2030. NASA is currently evaluating an estimated 10 to 12 proposals submitted by companies seeking one of several Commercial LEO Development (CLD) contracts for initial studies of commercial stations.

23,000-year-old footprints suggest people reached the Americas early

Footprints left behind in layers of clay and silt at New Mexico’s White Sands National Park may be between 23,000 and 21,000 years old. That’s based on radiocarbon dating of the remains of grass seeds buried in the layers of sediment above and below the tracks. If the dates are correct, the tracks are evidence that people walked beside the now-dry Lake Otero during the height of the last ice age, when kilometers of ice covered the northern half of the continent. And that would mean that people must have arrived in North America—and made their way to an area well south of the ice—before the ice sheets expanded enough to close off the route.

Apple May Be Forced to Embrace USB-C for Future iPhones

The European Union refuses to give up on the dream that one day, all of us will use the same damn charger for all our devices. Today, the European Commission announced it plans to force all smartphones—and several other types of electronics—to use USB-C as the one true charging standard.

The proposed plan has four parts. The first is that “USB-C will be the common port” so that consumers can charge their devices with the same charger, “regardless of device or brand.” The European Commission says it aims to prevent different companies from capping charging speeds, and companies will also be required to provide consumers with information about charging performance, as well as whether a device supports fast charging. The idea here is to educate consumers so they know whether their existing chargers will work with a new device. Lastly, the European Commission wants chargers to be unbundled from new devices, so you can buy a new smartphone without yet another charger included in the box.

Biden considering Defense Production Act to address semiconductor chip shortage: report

The Biden administration says it is considering using the Defense Production Act as a remedy to address the ongoing shortage of semiconductor chips in the U.S., and have reportedly already threatened companies with the prospect.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Bloomberg on Thursday she has warned industry leaders that the DPA is on the table, claiming businesses are not cooperating with the agency's requests for their data regarding supply chains.

"What I told them is, ‘I don’t want to have to do anything compulsory but if they don’t comply, then they’ll leave me no choice,’" Raimondo told the outlet. "I said today we’re evaluating all of our options right now, all the tools. I hope not to go there but we need to see some progress and we definitely need compliance."

Also on Thursday, the White House released a briefing on the semiconductor shortage and ways the administration is trying to address the issue.

Southern California is dealing with a traffic jam unlike any other, as a record number of container ships have been stuck waiting in the waters outside the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to unload cargo.

As of Wednesday, 62 container ships were waiting offshore to unload cargo, according to the Marine Exchange of Southern California.

Biden's reverse Midas touch threatens Democratic agenda

Republicans feared President Joe Biden would be relentless in enacting liberal policies with his congressional majorities, but Democratic division has thwarted him from turning that into a reality.

‘Eerie silence’ as Evergrande misses payment deadline

The embattled Chinese property developer Evergrande is inching closer to the potential default that investors fear, after missing an interest payment deadline.

The company, which has total debts of about $305bn (£222bn), has run short of cash, and investors are worried a collapse could pose systemic risks to China’s financial system and reverberate around the world.

A Thursday deadline for paying $83.5m in bond interest passed without remark from Evergrande, and bondholders had not been paid nor heard from the company, two people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

The firm is in uncharted waters and enters a 30-day grace period. It will default if that passes without payment.

“These are periods of eerie silence as no one wants to take massive risks at this stage,” said Howe Chung Wan, the head of Asia fixed income at Principal Global Investors in Singapore.
