Thought for the day
"Whether a man is a criminal or a public servant is purely a matter of perspective." -- Tom Robbins, Another Roadside Attraction
Within our Solar System, Mars is one of the most similar planets to Earth—both have rocky landscapes, solid outer crusts, and cores made of molten rock.
Because of its similarities to Earth and proximity, humanity has been fascinated by Mars for centuries. In fact, it’s one of the most explored objects in our Solar System.
But just how many missions to Mars have we embarked on, and which of these journeys have been successful? This graphic by Jonathan Letourneau shows a timeline of every mission to Mars since 1960 using NASA’s historical data.
Webmaster addition: One goof. The chart shows the Vikings landing on Mars in 1975. The actual landings took place in 1976!
A total of nine countries could be contaminated if the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is hit by multiple launch rocket systems, a former chief inspector of the USSR’s nuclear authority told RT.
Russian troops established control of the Zaporozhye NPP, Europe’s largest facility of the kind, early on in the course of military operations in Ukraine. Since then, Russia has repeatedly accused Kiev of launching artillery and drone strikes on the facility. Ukrainian officials claimed that the Russians were shelling themselves to discredit Kiev.
In an interview published on Tuesday, Vladimir Kuznetsov warned that if the plant is hit by volley fire, with numerous missiles striking the storage facility that holds spent nuclear fuel, chances are that more than one container would be damaged. This scenario would entail radiation escaping “into the environment – hence the contamination of not only the industrial site but also the Dnepr river which is nearby,” the expert noted.
Kuznetsov also pointed out that such a strike would most likely be accompanied by a fire, and “God knows where the wind would send the combustion products.”
The former chief inspector surmised that should 20 to 30 containers be breached in such an attack, the “radiation would affect approximately nine countries: Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states and obviously Western Ukraine.”
Russian forces took over the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in early March, within the first two weeks of Moscow’s military campaign against its neighbor.
Israel and Turkey will soon reappoint ambassadors to each other’s countries and restore full diplomatic ties, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said on Wednesday.
Relations between the two nations were downgraded back in 2018 after Israeli forces killed some 60 Palestinians during protests on the Gaza border. Ankara at the time condemned the heavy-handed treatment of demonstrators by Israel.
A statement released by the premier’s office, following talks between Lapid and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said: “it was decided to once again upgrade the level of the relations between the two countries to that of full diplomatic ties and to return ambassadors and consuls general.”
The normalization would, among other things, help “strengthen regional stability,” it added.
Russia's Crimean Bridge, the largest structure of its kind in Europe, “should be destroyed,” an aide to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has warned.
“It’s an illegal construction and the main gateway to supply the Russian army in Crimea,” Mikhail Podolyak told the Guardian on Tuesday, explaining why Kiev wants to attack it.
The bridge was constructed after Crimea broke away from Ukraine following an armed coup in Kiev in 2014 and voted in a referendum to join Russia. It forms a direct road and rail connection with the region, which previously could only be reached from the rest of Russia by sea or air. The bridge is predominantly used by civilian traffic.
Podolyak is the latest Ukrainian official to confirm Kiev’s intention to attack the structure. The remark came as he appeared to hint that Ukraine was in the process of delivering a series of acts of sabotage in Crimea.
Berlin has plans to subjugate Eastern Europe and has designs on the lands that it lost in the past, Adam Glapinski the head of the National Bank of Poland has claimed, adding that his country stands as a bulwark against those ambitions.
Glapinski offered the grim prediction about Warsaw’s current diplomatic confrontation with Berlin in an interview with Gazeta Polska, which was published on Wednesday.
Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Berlin’s strategic goal is to “regain in some form their former lands, which are now within Polish borders, and subordinate the entire belt of countries between Germany and Russia,” the Polish official said.
Viewed from afar, the extent of Ukrainian corruption appears to go far deeper than the recent shift in the narrative might suggest, and it might come back to bite the West as weapons sent to Kiev's forces are disappearing with no account as to their whereabouts.
Just as it was with America’s support for the Mujahideen in the 1980s in fighting a proxy war against the Soviets, its backing of the Ukrainian government may one day reap a whirlwind. And just like its involvement in Afghanistan, decades ago, supporting the ‘enemy of my enemy’ involves dealing with shady characters and whitewashing their wrongdoings.
Following the onset of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the media very abruptly ceased its coverage of Ukraine’s seedy political underbelly – with dirty dealings that go all the way to the top. Even America’s sweetheart, Vladimir Zelensky, did not come away unscathed in those reports.
The Americans were preparing to pull their troops out of Afghanistan for months, but the operation still turned out to be a disaster. Footage of young Afghans clinging to Lockheed C-5 Galaxy cargo planes at Kabul Airport went viral all over the world. And although it seems these images have vanished from mainstream discourse, the consequences of those events are yet to come. RT asked experts what President Joe Biden’s first and most important foreign policy decision cost his administration.
Fleeing on camera
The Cold War was full of symbols. One of the most striking of these was footage of US military personnel pushing helicopters off the landing deck of the destroyer USS Kirk in the Mekong Gulf in 1975. The helicopters had been operated by pilots taking part in the US military mission in South Vietnam who were removing diplomatic staff from a besieged Saigon, along with their families. They no longer planned to return to the burning capital, so the expensive aircraft were sunk in the South China Sea.
While the helicopters on the deck of the Kirk were a striking, albeit isolated, case of such an incident being caught on camera, the multi-day flight of thousands of people fearing the Islamist dictatorship of the Taliban, who were rapidly taking control of Kabul, was shown on all social networks. The situation was exacerbated by a terrorist attack in the now almost forgotten style of the aughts.
On August 26, an explosion was heard in an airport terminal building packed with refugees. Approximately 170 civilians and 13 American servicemen were killed. At the same time, the world was innundated by videos of groups of grim men in turbans sitting at tables in the government offices of the presidential palace. Kalashnikov assault rifles from all over the world, as well as American M4s and Swiss SGs, could also be seen in the frame.
In April, the UK clinched a deal with Rwanda that stipulates illegal migrants arriving in Britain via the English Channel will be sent to the East African nation, where their asylum claims will be processed.
An unnamed Foreign Office official has accused Rwanda’s government of resorting to “arbitrary detention, torture and even killings” as “accepted methods of enforcing control,” The Guardian reports referring to documents revealed during a High Court hearing on London’s plans to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda.
The official also claimed that “There are state control, security, surveillance structures from the national level down to [households]” in Rwanda, according to The Guardian.
This comes as the UK government is seeking to keep parts of the documents secret for fear the contents could damage international relations and threaten national security. In particular, No 10’s application for a public interest immunity (PII) certificate calls for keeping “10 short passages confidential.”
In 2018 during his speech to the UN General Assembly President Donald Trump lodged a warning to Germany about their country’s reliance on Russian energy.
Ordinary Americans and news organizations are demanding to know the reasons behind last week’s FBI raid at former President Donald Trump’s home in South Florida’s Mar-a-Lago Club, but President Joe Biden’s Justice Department wants to prevent the public from reading the documents that triggered the action, according to a court filing.
So… uh… about that white privilege. Is this what systemic inequality and implicit bias looks like in 2022 America? Where white people must sacrifice their vocation first to the betterment of non-whites? But wait a second… isn’t this what diversity ultimately means? [REPORT: Minneapolis Will Fire ‘White Teachers’ First: MPS Violates Civil Rights Act, Chalk Board Review, August 15, 2022]:
A new contract between Minneapolis Public Schools and the local teachers union mandates that white teachers must be fired first when any kind of staff downsizing is initiated.
“Starting with the Spring 2023 Budget Tie-Out Cycle, if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the District shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population,” the agreement, which was originally obtained by Alpha News, says. Minority teachers “may be exempted from district-wide layoff[s] outside seniority order,” and will also be given priority during reinstatement.
In addition, teachers at 15 “racially isolated schools…with the greatest concentration of poverty” will also be protected from layoffs.
The Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee have written to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI chief Christopher Wray and White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain telling them to produce all of the documents used to assemble the FBI's raid on President Donald Trump's residence in Florida.
The letter to Garland, whose department also has been involved in a scheme to persecute parents who object to their local school boards' anti-parent agendas, explains simply:
"The American people deserve answers for the Biden administration's continued misuse of law-enforcement resources against political opponents."
The letter asks for production of "all documents and communications referring or relating to the execution of a search warrant on President Trump's residence," "referring or relating to the decision to seek a search warrant," regarding the "use of confidential human sources(s)" regarding the search, "communications between or among the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, or the Executive Office of the President" about the raid, and more.
At least 130,000 people in the Detroit metropolitan area were still without fresh water as a boil water advisory continued following a weekend water main break and help could take anywhere from two weeks to a month.
The break happened at the Lake Huron water treatment facility Saturday morning, forcing Governor Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency in four counties.
Whitmer said: 'We are drawing on every resource we have and taking every action necessary to get impacted families the help they need'.
Webmaster addition: Remember what I said about our infrastructure being allowed to rot by the government?
A historic drought plaguing the southwest US is draining the Colorado River to record lows, which has forced the White House on Tuesday to implement water cuts in Arizona and Nevada for the second year in a row.
The move comes as Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the nations largest reservoirs, are barely above one-quarter of their capacity and any lower, these bodies of water will stop generating power and provide clean water to some 40 million Americans.
This has raised the shortage in the Lower Colorado River Basin to 'Tier 2,' which means cuts are in order. Arizona will receive 21 percent less and Nevada eight percent starting January 2023.
Associated Press reporter Mike Balsamo tweeted photos of the new barricades around the FBI headquarters.
“With an increasing number of threats against the FBI and agents, including an armed man who tried to breach a field office in Ohio, officials have put up barricades around FBI headquarters in DC. Similar fencing was put up after the unrest in DC in 2020 & after the Capitol riot,” he wrote.
Peter Schiff appeared on the Newsmax Saturday Report along with former Rep. Peter King (R-NY) to talk about President Joe Biden’s unwarranted inflation victory lap.
The CPI for July came in slightly cooler than June’s sizzling 9.1%. But even at 8.5%, CPI remains near 40-year highs. But Biden focused on the unchanged month-on-month CPI to declare victory over inflation and claimed he’s building “an economy that works for everyone.”
Host Rita Cosby kicked off the interview by asking Rep. King his views on funding for 87,000 IRS agents in the “Inflation Reduction Act.” King said the spending in the bill will be bad enough and that it will cause “long-term consequences,” but the beefed-up IRS will cause even more damage. He warned the agency will be weaponized to go after political opponents.
Peter Schiff went a step further and said he doesn’t even think the US should have an income tax.
I think the government should fund itself with excise taxes. I don’t think subjecting Americans to these types of audits is the type of country that the founding fathers envisioned when they created this republic.”
German power prices surged above 500 euros per megawatt-hour on the European Energy Exchange AG for the first time as the energy crisis worsened.
German year-ahead power jumped 6% to 507 euros per megawatt-hour as there are no signs of the natural gas rally slowing down.
Russia's reduction of NatGas flows via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and a scorching summer across Europe have been the main drivers of power prices. Since early June, power prices have risen 173%, pressuring households and businesses with unprecedented costs.
"The longer these price rises go up, the more this will be felt across the economy," said Daniel Kral, senior economist at consultant Oxford Economics. "The magnitude of the increase and magnitude of the crisis isn't comparable to anything in the past few decades."
Former California Democrat Congressman TJ Cox was arrested by the FBI on charges of wire fraud, money laundering and campaign law violations.
Cox was indicted on 28 crimes by a federal grand jury – “15 counts of wire fraud, 11 counts of money laundering, one count of financial institution fraud on a mortgage and one count of making illegal conduit contributions to his congressional campaign in 2017,” KFSN reported.
One month ago, with market pessimism at "dire" all-time highs, the mood on Wall Street was so apocalyptic, and sentiment so capitualitory that when looking at the monthly (July) Fund Manager Survey, even BofA's uber-bearish Chief Investment Strategist, Michael Hartnett turned bullish correctly timing the face-ripping, short-squeezed, stock-buybacked, retail-invested, CTA-chased meltup. This is how we summarized Hartnett's findings,
"the strategist writes that 'H2’22 fundamentals poor but sentiment says stocks/credit rally in coming weeks" and adds that the "contrarian Q3 trade is risk-on if no Lehman, CPI down, Fed pause by Xmas...short cash-long stocks, short US$-long Eurozone, short defensives-long stocks banks & consumer."
Once again, Hartnett - who over the past year emerged as Wall Street's most accurate analyst- was spot on, and more importantly, unlike his JPM peers who tell clients to buy every single week oblivious to being called out for total hacks, Hartnett actually timed the pivot just right.
With millions of German facing a painful freeze in the coming months, a winter gas surcharge, which will come into effect in October for German households and businesses, was set at 2.4 euro cents per kilowatt hour on Monday, DW reported on Monday.
Gas prices have been driven by German sanctions on Russian gas, prompting market concerns about energy security and also shortfalls in deliveries in some cases. And while so far, consumers have been largely shielded from the increases, with companies unable to pass on their increased costs, all that is about to change.
"It will get more expensive — there is no getting around that. Energy prices continue to rise. But: we are already unburdening citizens to the tune of €30 billion," Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Twitter on Monday, soon after the announcement. "And we are working on a further relief package. We will leave nobody alone with these increased costs."
The decision on the amount of the levy fell to the company charged with overseeing and coordinating the German gas market, Trading Hub Europe. The stated aim of the levy is to cover around 90% of the additional costs incurred by gas providers who are now paying higher prices to secure gas, in some cases from new sources other than Russia.
Truth Social CEO and former Congressman Devin Nunes appeared on Newsmax with Eric Bolling to call out the “psychopaths” who raided President Trump’s home and stole his passports.
The Gateway Pundit reported that President Trump’s three passports were stolen by the corrupt FBI agents who raided his home last week.
The passports were later returned, but Save America attorney Christina Bobb said, “They were willing to go past the four corners of the warrant and take whatever they felt was appropriate or what they could take.”
“That is absolutely not how a warrant is supposed to be executed,” she continued.
With this week marking a grim one-year anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Kabul, ending more than two decades of US and coalition occupation of the country in (now failed) attempts to prop up a national government, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday the White House will not release any of the $7 billion in Afghan central bank reserves still being held by the US.
Prior talks with Taliban officials who sought to get the funds released as the population faces hunger and a post-war collapsed economy have also been suspended. Biden administration officials cited that a key factor in the decision to block funds indefinitely was that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was found to be living safely in Kabul. That is, until a CIA drone strike which reportedly killed the notorious al-Qaeda leader on July 31.
However, it was revealed in the aftermath that the US has no DNA evidence or body proving that it was Zawahiri that was killed in the strike. The strong suggestion is of course that the Taliban allowed the AQ leader to take up residence in the Afghan capital soon after the US force withdrawal.
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West told the WSJ: "Needless to say, the Taliban’s sheltering of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri reinforces deep concerns we have regarding diversion of funds to terrorist groups."
On the question of the Taliban accessing humanitarian aid for the population, West said, "We do not see recapitalization of the Afghan central bank as a near-term option," adding that: "We do not have confidence that that institution has the safeguards and monitoring in place to manage assets responsibly."
So the posterity of those brave white men who won the Battle of Britain in 1940 might not be able to join the Royal Air Force (RAF), but at least they aren’t speaking German! [RAF ‘pauses job offers for white men’ to meet ‘impossible’ diversity targets: The alleged move has prompted the head of recruitment for the Royal Air Force (RAF) – herself a senior female officer – to resign in recent days in protest., Sky News, August 16, 2022]:
The RAF has effectively paused making job offers to white male recruits in favour of women and ethnic minorities to meet “impossible” diversity targets, defence sources have claimed.
The alleged move has prompted the head of recruitment for the Royal Air Force (RAF) – herself a senior female officer – to resign in recent days in protest amid concerns that any such restrictions on hiring, however temporary and limited, could undermine the fighting strength of the service, the sources said.
The defence sources accused Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, the head of the RAF, of appearing willing to compromise UK security at a time of growing threats from Russia and China in pursuit of albeit important goals such as improving diversity and inclusion.
The despot has brought back the honorary title ‘Mother Heroine’, established under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and scrapped after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Women who bear and raise ten or more children will be awarded with the honour and a one-time £13,000 cash payment as soon as their tenth child turns one year old.
Margot Cleveland, law professor and former law clerk for a quarter century for a Federal Appeals Court judge, writing in The Federalist points out that Trump-appointed FBI director Christopher Wray has shown his totalitarian character by equating legitimate criticism of the FBI’s Gestapo behavior for invading the home of President Trump with an attack by Trump supporters on law and order. Not only was the invasion gratuitous, it was done for the sole purpose of creating the impression that President Trump is a felon, as was the FBI’s seizure of Trump’s passport to prevent his flight from “justice.” America now has a Federal Bureau of Investigation that is a Ministry of the Interior Gestapo serving a dictatorial political movement.
Cleveland puts it this way:
“FBI Director Christopher Wray’s Thursday statement represents a disgraceful attempt to silence critics by conflating condemnation of the bureau’s conduct with violence and threats against law enforcement. This outrageous tactic will not work, and that Wray resorted to it confirms he no longer deserves to be FBI director.” https://thefederalist.com/2022/08/12/fbi-director-calls-legit-criticism-of-corrupt-fbi-violence-but-we-werent-born-yesterday/
Wray never deserved to be FBI director. He is just another of Trump’s many mindless appointments. As I predicted in 2016, Trump was ignorant of Washington and would staff his administration with the very ruling elite that he declared himself against. He would be destroyed by his own appointees, and he was. And now his own FBI director is trying to frame Trump up for conviction and put him in prison. Who is there to stop him?
There is much to recommend in the video above by Jared Taylor on the topic of White America’s unique guilt regarding the enslavement of blacks. Taylor has been in the fight for white(or hu-white)peoples all over the world for much of his adult life, and he has brought intelligence, erudition, and dignity(especially relative to Neo-Nazi morons and Alt Right bad boys). But, everyone has a blind-spot, willful or otherwise, that misses out on the whole picture. Taylor is no different. There is so much that is good about the video, but it fails to answer its own question because it ignores the the founding creed of America, the notable advantages/talents of blacks(especially in the age of hedonistic pop culture), and the dominant power of Jews in current America. Once those matters are addressed, the truth is plainly visible. It should indeed be obvious WHY American Slavery has come to be regarded as a special evil unlike all others.
Though Jared Taylor is far more honest and courageous than most commentators on controversial topics, he tends to shy away from open discussion of Jewish power/influence, the black athletic/sexual threat, and the contradictions of the American Creed(and history). It is then hardly surprising that for much of the video, he goes into Pat Condell mode and dumps on Muslims and their brutal histories regarding conquests, slavery, and atrocities. Not being an expert on Muslim history, I defer to Taylor’s knowledge on the subject. But why doesn’t Taylor mention the Jewish role in slavery as well? Surely, Jews practiced slavery as much as any other people. According to Thomas Sowell, Jews played a prominent role in European slave trade in the Middle Ages. Jews sold plenty of white Europeans to Arabs and the like. (Jews also collaborated with Muslim conquerors of Southern Europe.)
When Trump left office I wrote that he would be “hounded into oblivion.” It is happening precisely as I said. Not content with framing Trump with Russiagate, impeachgate, January 6 insurrection, his business practices, and other investigations in preparation, Trump is now being framed for withholding presidential documents from the National Archives.
The success that the Democrats and the presstitutes have had in defining as a crime any and every thing that disagrees with them, including thought crimes attributed to their opponents, has permitted the Democrats to lay the foundation for a coup. The Democrats, DOJ, and FBI, with the full support of the Presstitutes, have organized a Nazi-style Putsch. You are watching it daily on CNN. https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/15/politics/lindsey-graham-georgia-investigation/index.html
Not content to frame a Republican president, they are also going after Republican senators. An Obama-appointed Democrat federal district judge, Leigh Martin May, has ruled that US Senator Lindsey Graham, must appear before a county grand jury in Georgia that is investigating what the county Democrats and CNN are calling, contrary to all known evidence, “former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.” Trump and his supporters wanted widely reported and documented electoral fraud investigated and corrections made where warranted. Trump could have overturned the election only if investigation proved the suspicions to be correct. By blocking the investigation, the Democrats admitted by implication that the election was stolen. If the election was not stolen, the Democrats had nothing to fear and had no need to split the country by labeling those suspicious of irregularities “domestic terrorists” who had to be denied a hearing and shut down. Clearly, the Democrats’ behavior indicate a guilty party hiding its crime.
Even if I was fully vaccinated, I would admire the unvaccinated because they withstood the greatest pressure I've ever seen, even from partners, parents, children, friends, colleagues and doctors.
People capable of such personality, courage, and criticality are undoubtedly the best of mankind. They are everywhere, in all ages, stages of education, states and imaginations. They are of a special kind, they are the soldiers that every army of light wants in its ranks. They are the parents every child wants and the children every parent dreams of. They are beings that rise above the average of their society, they are the essence of the people who have built all cultures and conquered horizons. They are there, next to you, they look normal, but they are superheroes.
They did what others couldn't, they were the tree that endured the hurricane of insults, discrimination and social exclusion. And they did it because they thought they were alone, and believed they were the only ones.
Banned from their family's table at Christmas, they never saw anything so cruel. They lost their jobs, their careers had sunk, they were out of money... but they didn't care. They suffered immense discrimination, condemnation, betrayal and humiliation...but they carried on.
