Thought for the day

"Only one thing to it: a strong stomach. The guts to gladhand a man you're going to stab in the back; pledge allegiance to principles you stomp on every day; righteously denounce some despot in the press and sell him arms under the table. The talent to whip up the voters' worst passions while you seem to call on their highest instincts, and the sense to stay wrapped in the flag. That's politics: I'll take the simple life." -- Beaumarchais, The Marriage of Figaro

Sororities at the University of Alabama, rejecting current political correctness, stuck together as they opposed a biological male attempting to join their groups.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, like many Republicans, was outraged by the FBI’s unprecedented raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

So much so, in fact, that he’s moving to ensure that nothing the Justice Department obtained from the raid can be used to jam up the former president and indict him.

According to Monday reports, the Kentucky Republican will publicly call for repealing the century-old Espionage Act which the DOJ reportedly may use to charge Trump with illegally possessing classified materials.

Paul’s move to ditch the Espionage Act comes amid questions over whether documents in Trump’s possession were actually classified; he has said he declassified everything shortly before leaving office, which is a long-standing presidential prerogative.

“The espionage act was abused from the beginning to jail dissenters of WWI. It is long past time to repeal this egregious affront to the 1st Amendment,” Paul tweeted without mentioning the former president specifically.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reportedly offered access to the department’s vast biometric databanks to any foreign state that would agree to reciprocate.

According to a July 22 Statewatch report, DHS is “sales pitching” the enhanced border security agreements to potential foreign partners. As per the document titled, “DHS International Biometric Information Sharing (IBIS) Program,” the program provides “a scalable, reliable and rapid bilateral biometric and biographic information sharing capability to support border security and immigration vetting.”

Biometric technologies generally refer to the use of technology to identify a person based on some aspect of their biology. Fingerprint recognition is one of the first and original biometric technologies that have been grouped loosely under digital forensics.

The DHS stated that these physical (such as a fingerprint or iris pattern) or behavioral traits (such as voice patterns) are used for the automated recognition of individuals.

Human rights and civil liberties advocates raised concerns about the collection of people’s biometric information by the DHS and possibly sharing these with foreign governments and corporations. This is a clear violation of privacy, critics say.

Power prices across the EU jumped to a fresh record high on Tuesday, as natural gas costs climbed further on falling supply from Russia, data from the European Energy Exchange AG shows.

Benchmark day-ahead prices in Germany advanced to €490.79 ($497) per megawatt-hour, from June’s average of €218.03, according to market data provider Nord Pool.

The current prices are almost six times higher than in August 2021.

The EU’s energy market is rattled by fears over whether power plants will be able to provide enough electricity this winter amid the tightening gas supply.

Gas prices in the region have quadrupled this year, driven by the drop in deliveries from Russia due to Ukraine-related sanctions and technical setbacks. EU countries have been trying to diversify imports by buying more liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as increasing supplies of pipeline gas from Norway, Algeria and Azerbaijan. However, according to the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, the bloc is “approaching the limits of what extra gas” it can buy from “non-Russian sources.” Meanwhile, France has increasingly turned to nuclear power to generate additional electricity, while other EU states have been reviving coal-fired plants.

Just under a week after his private residence in Florida was raided by FBI agents, former President Donald Trump released his latest statement condemning the Justice Department investigation that paved the way for the unannounced search.

In a post to his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, he wrote that the “sneak attack on democracy” was unlike anything else in American history.

Trump noted that the nation “has never suffered this kind of ABUSE in Law Enforcement,” suggesting that an FBI raid on the home of a former president “is totally unheard of and unthinkable.”

Reiterating the fact that he was unaware that any such search had been ordered and that he was not at home when agents showed up to his Mar-a-Lago estate, the former president concluded that the entire ordeal was a thinly veiled partisan attack.

According to a report from The Daily Wire, Disney will re-release old films in hopes of making up cash lost on recent box office flops like Lightyear —a film that only made $51 million dollars over its three-day opening weekend. For comparison, 2019’s Toy Story 4 made $121 million on its opening weekend.

From The Daily Wire:

Disney is therefore re-releasing the Star Wars solo film “Rogue One,” which debuted in 2016, as well as “Avatar,” which debuted in 2009. “Andor,” a spinoff series for the former flick, debuts on streaming platform Disney+ in the fall, while “Avatar: The Way of Water” debuts at the end of the year.

Disney’s most recent earnings report indicates that Americans may be rejecting the company’s foray into wokeness. Although Disney reported last Wednesday that total subscriptions for Disney+ increased from 87.6 million to 93.6 million during the third quarter of its current fiscal year, the vast majority of growth arose from international users, with only 100,000 new subscriptions coming from the domestic market. The latest figures represent a significant slowdown from the 1.5 million new domestic subscribers added by Disney during its fiscal second quarter.

Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick has topped the box office this year, with $1.4 billion in worldwide revenue and $674 million domestic.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said President Joe Biden can not be trusted because he lies all the time. In an interview Monday, the lawmaker from Wisconsin said Biden has a record of false and misleading statements, meaning his denial of politicizing the FBI can not be taken seriously.

“I don’t believe anything Joe Biden tells me,” stated the Republican. “We investigate his son Hunter and Joe Biden repeatedly said that he had never spoken to his son about overseas business deals. Now we know he spoke to him all the time about it.”

Johnson pointed to Biden’s past denial of knowing about his son Hunter Biden’s business deals with China and as one example of his lies. The senator added, the FBI is obviously being used to target Biden’s political opponents.

“So I don’t believe Joe Biden and I certainly don’t believe (Attorney General) Merrick Garland and the higher ups in the FBI,” Johnson continued. “They have been lying to the American public as well. They’ve been covering things up, so it’s obvious that the FBI has been politicized, the Department of Justice has. To me this is looking more and more like dispute over the President’s declassification authority. My understand is that the President is the ultimate of authority in terms of what is going to be declassified.”

Cheney and Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman will battle it out for the Cowboy State’s only House seat on Tuesday —and Cheney is way behind in every available poll.

And Wyoming is Trump country.

“Trump won Wyoming by more than 40 points in 2020, and a recent poll conducted by the Casper Star-Tribune found Cheney was running 22 points behind Hageman, a natural resources litigator who has campaigned tirelessly throughout the state while Cheney has courted national media approval as vice chair of House Democrats’ Jan. 6 panel,” Just The News reports.

“Another poll found that just 15% of Wyoming Republicans are supporting Cheney in her reelection bid, while 98% of Wyoming Democrats planning to vote in the GOP primary support her.”

Cheney’s primary represents the last contest involving House GOP members who voted to impeach Donald Trump after Jan. 6. “Of the 10 impeachment Republicans in the House, four members retired, three lost their primaries, two prevailed, and Cheney appears headed for defeat,” Just The News adds.

The study, co-authored by Shirley Beresford, senior associate dean and professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health, and co-author of the study, said: “Part of what makes this study important is that people who regularly drink soda or other sugary beverages tend to switch to artificially sweetened beverages to lose weight when the ideal is to substitute with water.”

This formation of blood clots in the small arteries is dangerous because it sets the stage for further complications such as stroke.

In fact, the findings showed that compared with women who consumed diet drinks less than once a week or not at all, women who consumed to or more per day were 23 percent more likely to have a stroke.

Walt Disney Co. ( NYSE: DIS ) investors have expressed skepticism about current and fairly newly minted CEO Bob Chapek. The entertainment company has gone into decline over most of his tenure. Disney’s stock price has cratered, and the primary key to its future, which is its streaming video business, has shown signs of faltering. Nevertheless, Disney’s board has made the mistake of giving Chapek an extended contract.

Enter Dan Loeb of Third Point, an investment firm that preys on poor management. It has pressed for a reorganization of Disney’s streaming business. Loeb wrote “Disney’s costs are among the highest in the industry, and we believe Disney significantly underearns relative to its potential. We urge the Company to embark on a cost cutting program that addresses both margins and the disposal of excess underperforming assets.” He also asked for a “refresh” of Disney’s board. The request seems fair since some board members have served since before Chapek’s initial appointment.

Loeb wants ESPN spun off. The request has the strength of being reasonable. ESPN remains an odd asset when set side by side with Disney’s theme park, TV and movie businesses. Like many spin-offs, its value should be clearer when it stands alone.

Bloomberg reporter and Apple specialist Mark Gurman theorized that advertisements will come to Apple Maps, and one day expand to Apple Books and Apple Podcasts.

Gurman reported that businesses could pay Apple to have their listings appear at the top of the search results.

A similar practice is already in action in the App Store, where developers pay to have their apps for games or services listed near the top in response to search terms.

The company also runs ads during streams of Major League Baseball games on their premium service Apple TV+.

Democrats celebrated the FBI’s raid on Donald Trump’s private home in Mar-a-Lago.

Hillary Clinton even tried to cash in on the raid by selling merchandise mocking Donald Trump over her missing email servers.

But Hillary Clinton is fuming over what Ron DeSantis said about the FBI’s raid on Donald Trump.

Last Monday, armed FBI agents stormed Donald Trump’s private home in Mar-a-Lago while he was away in New York City.

The FBI claims it carried out the raid because of documents Donald Trump allegedly took with him from the White House that belong with the National Archives.

After nine hours of ransacking Trump’s home, agents left with 11 sets of allegedly classified documents.

Democrats and the left-wing press celebrated the news of FBI agents raiding Mar-a-Lago, believing it was part of the plan to stop him from running in 2024.

But Republicans rallied behind Donald Trump like never before, solidifying his support among the GOP.

A major law enforcement operation to locate and assist victims of human trafficking and related crimes resulted in the location of more than 200 victims during the first two weeks of August.

Operation Cross Country is a coordinated operation among the FBI, other federal agencies, state and local police, and social services agencies across the country to find and assist victims of human trafficking, particularly child victims.

“The initiative really just takes a concentrated period of time where we’re just focused on the problem of child sex trafficking,” said Section Chief Jose Perez, who oversees violent crime investigations in the FBI. “What we do is we sit down with our local partners and our task forces and identify certain areas where we know sex trafficking is prevalent, and we’ll dedicate resources and efforts to identify and remove victims from those areas.”

Los Angeles County reported Monday that over 27% of the signatures submitted on petitions to recall District Attorney George Gascón were invalid — after reporting that less than 1% of mail-in ballots were invalid in the 2020 election.

The county reported that it rejected 195,783 of the 715,833 signatures submitted, roughly 27.3%. The reasons given included that some voters were found to be unregistered; incorrect addresses were given; or signatures did not match those on file.

However, in January 2021, the county reported that less than 1% of the 3,422,585 vote-by-mail ballots submitted were rejected. The test for the validity of ballots is similar to that of petitions, involving checking signatures and addresses.

Given that the State of California mailed ballots to every voter on the rolls, rather than just to those who had requested them as in years past, there was a high likelihood of error; some voters reported receiving multiple ballots, often for prior residents. (These problems persisted in the 2021 recall election for Gov. Gavin Newsom, as personally witness by this author.)

Yet the county reported that 99.38% of vote-by-mail ballots were accepted in 2020. The number of vote-by-mail ballots that were rejected due to inaccurate signatures (12,135) in the election was close to the number rejected for that reason in the recall petitions (9,490), though the number of signatures to be examined in the election was roughly five times greater.
