Thought for the day

"Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it." -- Mark Twain

Jamil Hassan, an Afghan translator who worked for Gens. David Petraeus (Ret.) and John Nicholson (Ret.) and author of Promises Betrayed: An Afghan Interpreter at The Fall of Kabul, said on SirusXM’s Breitbart News Sunday with host Joel Pollak that President Joe Biden’s decisions regarding the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Afghanistan led to “chaos.”

The Americans were preparing to pull their troops out of Afghanistan for months, but the operation still turned out to be a disaster. Footage of young Afghans clinging to Lockheed C-5 Galaxy cargo planes at Kabul Airport went viral all over the world. And although it seems these images have vanished from mainstream discourse, the consequences of those events are yet to come. RT asked experts what President Joe Biden’s first and most important foreign policy decision cost his administration.

With this week marking a grim one-year anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Kabul, ending more than two decades of US and coalition occupation of the country in (now failed) attempts to prop up a national government, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday the White House will not release any of the $7 billion in Afghan central bank reserves still being held by the US.

Vladimir Putin has said Russia and North Korea will expand bilateral relations. Putin told the North Korean ruler, Kim Jong-un, that the two countries would "expand the comprehensive and constructive bilateral relations with common efforts", the Pyongyang's state news agency KCNA reported on Monday. Separately, the Russian ambassador in Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov, has said working with the Taliban is necessary where it "suits our interests", the Guardian reported.

Watch: One Year After The Afghanistan Withdrawal, Biden's Hasty Decision Looks Even Worse

A Florida GOP congressman and former Army Green Beret kicked off a six-figure ad buy highlighting the anniversary of the fall of Afghanistan.

Top House Republicans marked one year since the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan by vowing to hold the Biden administration accountable. In an op-ed published Monday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and four committee ranking members said the administration has denied Congress as well as the American public adequate answers about the withdrawal.

Monday August 15 marks the one year anniversary since the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan - which kicked off weeks of a botched US scramble to evacuate the remaining military, State Department, and US civilians from the Afghan capital. Tens of thousands of translators and other Afghans arrived at the airport in waves, desperate to get out amid the Taliban onslaught.
